Identical to the basic unarmed combat punch and kick. Maximum attacks per turn is determined by the Martial arts combat skill level.

Steal

Damage type Range MAPT IS LDV Pain (All ACs)
Special Melee 1 1 N N/A
  • Inflicts no Pain or Limb Damage.
  • The creature will attempt to steal either coins or valuables from the target's inventory.
    • If there are no compatible items in the target's inventory, the technique fails automatically.
    • Otherwise, both the attacking creature and the target creature must roll 2d6+Agi to determine whether the stealing attempt succeeds.
      • If the attacker's roll is equal or superior to the target's, Steal is successful.
      • On a success, the creature will steal either (GM's choice): Up to 100 coins of one random type, or one random valuable, instantly transferring the stolen items to the attacking creature's own inventory.

Equipment

Clothing and armor

This creature can wear Type T youkai outfits.

By default, this creature wears no outfit and is effectively naked.

Load-bearing equipment

Other information

Creature traits:

  • Shape-shifter: This creature has the ability to disguise itself as another creature, taking on their appearance, clothing, armor, and LBE (but not weapons, items, or skills). Below is their standard strategy.
    • This creature typically does not appear in its natural form and will be encountered appearing as a random sapient species (&creature-civ + corresponding occupation)
    • This creature generally begins by appearing destitute, wounded, hungry, thirsty, or in need of help, and will try getting other people or adventurers to approach them and convince them to render aid
    • The GM may roll a Negotiation skill check on behalf of this creature to check if they convince their target.
      • If they are successful, this target can initiate combat immediately. If they do so, they have the first turn to themselves (no other creature can attack that turn).
      • This creature will prioritize using the Steal technique. If they successfully steal an object, this creature will flee at the first opportunity.
      • If they manage to steal an object, or if attacked before they de-transform, they will prioritize fleeing and may only fight if backed in a corner.

Skills:

  • Combat skills: Unskilled (all combat skills)
  • Non-combat skills: Unskilled (all non-combat skills)

Mamono (魔物) is a Youkai-go term which means "evil spirit". It is a category of creatures that have appeared in the Mazes alongside youkai, which possess a range of magical abilities and traits. Whereas youkai are sapient, civilized creatures that have integrated into society and communities, mamono are feral monsters residing in the Uncivilized Area, being one more category of dangerous creatures that can be found there.

Kuda-gitsune is a Youkai-go term that literally translates to "tube fox". This name comes from their ability to stuff themselves into vents, ducts, large pipes, and other tight passageways with relative ease. They physically resemble kitsune and appear fully sapient, including the ability to speak Common and Youkai-go, but with a few notable differences: they cannot grow more than one tail, and generally possess a shorter, thinner, almost tube-like build, with an average height of 5 feet 6 inches. Instead of elemental magic, shields, and self-healing spells, kuda-gitsune can shape-shift and disguise themselves as other creatures, typically sapient species such as humans, halflings, and youkai. The shape-shifting abilities extend to clothing and LBE, but cannot replicate weapons or items.

Their standard strategy is to camp out in the Uncivilized Area and imitate the appearance of another creature in the hopes of stealing money and other valuables. Their standard strategy is to appear as though they need help, by pretending to be starving, dehydrated, injured, or otherwise in need of help. If a potential victim gets close enough, they de-transform, attempt stealing the valuables, then make a rapid escape. They have no particular fighting talents and would rather flee if confronted. Aided partly by their generally slim constitution, kuda-gitsune are highly agile and are excellent runners.

While kuda-gitsune shapeshifting is notable for its ability to imitate the bodies, clothing, and armor of other creatures, it is only an illusion. When de-transformed, kuda-gitsune can, in theory, wear the same outfits as kitsune (Type T bodies), but generally choose not to, as transforming causes them to lose anything they were wearing. Consequently, kuda-gitsune generally disregard clothing entirely except when absolutely necessary.

When not camping in the UA to prey on unsuspecting adventurers, kuda-gitsune live in small groups in the Uncivilized Area, hiding in "nests" formed out of small corners and other hard-to-reach areas to keep themselves safe from retribution. Successful packs of kuda-gitsune tend to hoard the items they stole, viewing them as pretty objects to be collected and appearing to ignore or not understand their monetary value. Despite their apparent ability to speak Common or Youkai-go while transformed, it seems they only speak and understand a few phrases for the purpose of luring adventurers. When interacting amongst their own kind, kuda-gitsune speak in an unrecognizable dialect that only they can understand. In turn, they generally stay away from towns and intersections, viewing them as too dangerous.

Recognizing a disguised kuda-gitsune and discerning them from individuals in real need of help in the UA can be rather difficult, as their disguises are fairly convincing. If you suspect a wounded individual might be a kuda-gitsune, ask specific questions about their injuries, identities, or town of origin. Most kuda-gitsune will have difficulties offering straight answers, as their grasp on the Common and youkai-go languages is fairly limited. You can also "defuse" a potential kuda-gitsune encounter by immediately offering a low-value gemstone or coins - most will not be able to resist and will de-transform to take the valuables.

It is very rare for a kuda-gitsune to approach sapients with peaceful intentions, but a rare few instances have been documented, where they were described as friendly, loyal, if needy creatures in constant need of feeding, collecting shiny objects, and attention.
