Mamono (魔物) is a Youkai-go term which means "evil spirit". It is a category of creatures that have appeared in the Mazes alongside youkai, which possess a range of magical abilities and traits. Whereas youkai are sapient, civilized creatures that have integrated into society and communities, mamono are feral monsters residing in the Uncivilized Area, being one more category of dangerous creatures that can be found there.
The best way to describe the basan is with these two words: "Fire chicken".
Resembling a tall and very colorful chicken, the basan unfortunately isn't as inoffensive as an actual chicken would be. It is a violent and territorial creature that will do two things to intruders: pecking them... and breathing fire at them, therefore making them significantly more dangerous than they first look, especially in large groups.
Be cautious around basan, especially if there's more than three in the same room. Certain adventurers judge it wise to use a hand grenade or some other method of disposing of these groups as swiftly as possible, as it avoids having to fight a pack of angry fire-breathing birds. Others, however, recommend stealth, patience, and silent or suppressed weapons, so that they can be picked off one by one, preferably without ruining too much of the meat. Basan tastes exactly like chicken, and is sometimes substituted for actual chicken during shortages. Not only that, but upon dying, these creatures leave hot, perfectly cooked bodies. One only needs to pluck them and cut them into pieces, and they can be eaten as-is.
