A legendary eight-legged creature, part bird and part dragon.
The basilisk is a creature of legend, already known to the Mazes during the medieval era. Referred to as the lanlaken in the Old Tongue, a compound of the words for "chicken" (lanlan) and "dragon" (ken), the name transliterating to "chicken dragon'. As the etymology suggests, the basilisk is a part-bird, part-dragon beast, possessing the head, wings, and feathered tail of a bird - specifically, a chicken, and a draconic body with eight legs and armor scales. It is roughly 5 feet tall, and its adult weight ranges between 80 and 130 pounds.
Somewhat like a dragon, the basilisk is very tough, bullet-resistant, and has a very low pain sensitivity. Despite the chicken head, the basilisk does not make clucking sounds nor is it capable of a cock-a-doodle-do. Instead, the basilisk famously hisses, very loudly, especially when it detects a threat.
Medieval legends often exaggerated the capabilities of the basilisk, variously describing it as firebreathing (like an actual dragon, or perhaps a basan), or capable of turning people into stone statues, either with a hiss, or a single touch. Real basilisks remain extremely dangerous even without any of these abilities, because in lieu of a tongue, they possess a long, fleshy, tube-shaped appendage with a hard, sharp pointed tip. This appendage is hollow, appearing to possess a tiny nozzle at the tip. This organ, which biologists call the "needle", lets the basilisk inject venom into their prey. The needle delivers the venom at a very high pressure, which allows the basilisk spit their venom at ranges of up to 50 feet.
Despite the appearances, basilisk meat tastes like neither chicken nor dragon, and is actually very bland and tough - neither particularly delicious nor completely unserviceable for sustenance.
