The giant beaver is an enormous version of an extinct species in the Mazes, the beaver (castor canadensis). Giant beavers resemble their ancestors, but are much larger; standing at about 2 feet 7 inches tall, 5 feet 5 inches long (tail included), and weighing up to 170 pounds.

Just like their extinct ancestors, giant beavers are equipped with large, flat tails. Modern-day scientists have theorized this flat tail is an ancestral remnant from a time when bodies of water might have been more abundant, suggesting it was used as a rudder to help them swim more efficiently. Today's giant beavers primarily use this tail for three purposes: as a balancing prop to help them stand up and reach things, as a signaling device (repeatedly tapping their tails on the floor produces a distinctive "tap, tap, tap" sound), and occasionally, as a weapon to defend themselves with.

Outside of their tails, giant beavers primarily use their teeth, both as a tool and as a weapon. As tools, the beaver's teeth are excellent precision cutting implements, which they use to chew through wooden objects. Curiously, giant beavers use the scrap wood they cut or chewed that way to build strange constructs, referred to by scientists as beaver dams. These "dams" are thought to be another remnant of its possibly aquatic ancestor, as they are effective at blocking or redirecting the flow of water. The primary purpose of these dams for today's giant beavers appears to be building shelters with protective spikes or sharp ends, keeping them safe from predators.

If provoked, a giant beaver will fight back, and when it doesn't try humiliating an opponent with its tail, it will mercilessly bite it, inflicting multiple bleeding wounds in the process. However, it is not a particularly tough creature, and it will go down with a few well-placed shots or swings from most weapons. Hunters sometimes look for giant beavers, due to the rather particular taste of their meat: it is close to that of beef, but with a somewhat sweet flavor. When cooked properly, beaver meat gains a flavor and consistency approaching that of beef jerky, without the salt.
