Foxes (vulpes vulpes) are the smallest canine species in the Mazes.

These small creatures are well-known for their ability to crawl into nearly any corner or tight space, their omnivorous diet, and their tendency to steal or scavenge food from sapient sources. On average, a typical fox is about 1 to 1.5 feet tall and weighs about 15 pounds. Similarly to wolves, foxes belong to packs. However, the average size of these packs is much smaller, typically ranging between 2 individuals (a dominant breeder and his vixen) and 8-10, primarily the dominant pair's cubs.

Although traveling groups of foxes aren't rare, each typically roams the UA individually. Most foxes have evolved the ability to make precise jumps and pull on door handles, allowing their pack members and themselves through the various rooms in the UA. They generally forage in piles of refuse, but view food stolen directly from the source - such as an adventurer's backpack - to be among the best possible prizes.

The kitsune shares some genetic similarities with the fox.

Foxes typically prefer avoiding confrontations and dodging or fleeing incoming threats rather than fighting back. Compared to most other creatures in the Mazes, their small size and limited strength means they are at a marked disadvantage in direct combat. However, they are known for acting neutrally, if not friendly towards sapients, in the hopes of obtaining food without stealing or fighting. This behavior has given foxes (and, by proxy, kitsune) the reputation of being charming creatures, more prone to using wits, charm, and cunning than brute strength.

Consequently, foxes are rarely a threat to even the most ill-equipped of adventurers, even in large groups. Some, mainly raiders, hunt foxes for meat, but doing so is generally considered an act of desperation. The average size of a fox limits the maximum amount of meat that can be practically harvested, and although the meat is said to resemble deer venison in taste, it is tough, chewy, and tends to emit strange odors when cooked.
