Other information

Creature traits:

  • Delicacy meat: When butchered, this creature's meat is considered to be a delicacy, worth double the value of regular game meat.
  • Dimorphic: The sex of each creature must be generated, as there are critical differences between males and females. Roll 1d2 for each creature (1: Male, 2: Female).
    • Males (bucks) have 2 antlers, which are part of the creature's EXTREMITY limb group. The presence of these antlers gives them the ability to use the Antler strike attack.
    • Females (does) lack the antlers males possess, leaving them with no EXTREMITY limbs. The lack of antlers allows them to use the Headbutt attack.
  • Yields extra items when butchered: If butchered, this creature will produce extra items:
    • For each antler with at least 1 HP remaining on death: 1 Bone antler
    • Otherwise: Nothing

The white-tailed deer, often simply called "whitetail" in short, is perhaps the quintessential deer species. Like all deer, adult males are known as bucks, adult females are does, and all juveniles (under 1-year-old) are called fawns. An average adult whitetail is usually about 3 feet tall at the shoulder. Adult bucks weigh about 150 lbs, whereas does average 110 lbs. Their overall size and weight are remarkably similar to those of average humans, to the point that white-tailed deer are used as a standard of lethality when judging the effectiveness of a weapon in the Mazes. In other words, if it's good enough to kill a deer, it's probably good enough to kill a man.

One trait white-tailed deer definitely do not share with humans and other sapients is combativity. Whitetails are fearful of conflict and prefer fleeing over fighting, only using their natural weapons - hooves, heads, and antlers - if they have been backed into a corner. Reports of deer-induced injuries are, therefore, very rare.

They are a commonly hunted species in the Mazes, and their meat - referred to as venison - is a delicacy well-known for being lean, with a rich texture and earthy flavor. Virtually any restaurant will be more than happy to welcome hunters with freshly-butchered deer venison for sale. Although it is more of a tradition than a hard rule, hunters prefer to leave does alone and prioritize shooting bucks as it also allows them to harvest the antlers. The older a buck is, the longer its antlers grow, making it a point of pride to take down mature bucks, as it means taking down an animal that likely survived many encounters.
