5.45x39mm is a type of ammunition for firearms. It is classified as a (R)ifle caliber, and was originally designed for the Kalashnikov AK-74.
This cartridge is essentially a smaller-caliber version of the 7.62x39mm cartridge, employing many of the same principles introduced by the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge; a small-caliber, high-velocity, low-recoiling rifle round, suitable for select-fire combat rifles.
5.45x39mm is typically pronounced five four five by thirty-nine millimeters. It is also acceptable to pronounce 5.45 five point forty-five.
This caliber may also be known as 5.45x39.5mm or 5.45mm Kalashnikov. In real life, these designations have also been used: 5.45x39mm WP (for Warsaw Pact), 5.45mm Soviet, and rarely and in the United States only, .21 Genghis and .215 Russian. None of these real-life designations are in use in the Mazes, but are provided here for information.
