Mamono (魔物) is a Youkai-go term which means "evil spirit". It is a category of creatures that have appeared in the Mazes alongside youkai, which possess a range of magical abilities and traits. Whereas youkai are sapient, civilized creatures that have integrated into society and communities, mamono are feral monsters residing in the Uncivilized Area, being one more category of dangerous creatures that can be found there.
Akaname is a Youkai-go term which can be transliterated to "filth licker" or "grime eater".
The akaname is a short humanoid creature, usually no taller than 4 feet. Though they can stand upright, they usually walk on all fours, crawling along the ground in search of trash and garbage, which it seems to have the ability to eat and digest. Despite their voracious appetite, they always seem to maintain a lithe, almost skeletal appearance, with an average weight of 50 to 60 pounds. The most distinctive trait of an akaname, however, is its stench; they are foul-smelling creatures, who seem to only enjoy themselves in filthy, putrid environments and pungent smells.
They detest the very concept of cleaning themselves, to the point of finding contact with water to be as painful as a burn. For all of these reasons, these creatures are actually weak to water, and are most easily defeated using jets of water. Of course, more conventional methods are still perfectly viable; so before you waste your drinking water on them, try your usual weapons first.
Akaname should not be underestimated. Despite their scrawny appearance and the fact they are relatively easy to kill, they can still form large groups and band together to assault adventurers. Their bites and claws are poisonous, and they can spit gobs of acid from a distance; a group of these creatures performing all of these attacks at once can ruin your day very quickly.
Most interestingly, these creatures are intelligent enough to use tools and weapons; some have been seen crafting crude clothing for themselves, while others have used sticks and knives to poke through garbage bags and consume the contents. However, the vast majority choose not to use any tools, simply relying on their natural abilities. Despite their foul appearance and their hostility to travelers and adventurers, biologists believe they serve an important role in the Mazes, as their fondness for eating garbage is, ironically, contributing to keeping the UA clean and the roads passable. Certain members of the scientific community are trying to raise awareness to the role akaname play in the Mazes, wishing for adventurers to save their water and their ammunition, and to simply leave them alone and not fight them, unless absolutely necessary.
