7.62x39mm is a type of ammunition for firearms. It is classified as a (R)ifle caliber, and was originally designed for a number of firearms; the Simonov SKS semi-automatic rifle, the Degtyaryov RPD machine gun, and the Kalashnikov AK-47, which was succeeded by its far more well-known modernized version, the AKM.
In real life, 7.62x39mm is designated as an 'intermediate' cartridge, because it is more powerful than a pistol round, but less than a "full-size" rifle round. Although it wasn't the first of its kind (that honor goes to 7.92x33mm Kurz), it was, by far, the most popular, owing to the proliferation of AK-family rifles. 7.62x39mm AK-pattern rifles are, by far, the most common type of assault rifle in the world.
7.62x39mm is typically pronounced seven point six two by thirty-nine millimeters. It is also acceptable to pronounce 7.62 seven six two.
This caliber may also be known as 7.62mm Kalashnikov. In real life, these designations have also been used: 7.62x39mm WP (for Warsaw Pact), 7.62mm Soviet, and more rarely, .30 Russian Short.
