Of the many bear species in the Mazes, the grizzly bear is the most violent and dangerous.

The grizzly's appearance is relatively similar to the brown bear, due to being a subspecies of the latter. Grizzlies are slightly smaller than regular brown bears but larger than black bears, with a height of about 4 feet on all fours, an average length of slightly over 7 feet, and an average weight of about 600-700 lbs for males and 350-400 lbs for females.

The grizzly is famous for being even more violent and prone to fighting than the brown bear. The grizzly's behavior, frequently described as territorial and combative, is almost dragon-like in its tendency to prefer combat over all possible solutions to a problem. The word "grizzly" is believed to come from the Common homophone grisly, a synonym of "terrifying" or "gruesome."

If hunting a brown bear is considered a rite of passage for hunters in the Mazes, surviving a grizzly bear attack is the equivalent in raider communities, due to its ferocity and awe-inspiring appearance. The grizzly is such a symbol of raider culture that the most successful gangs have managed to tame a few for the sole purpose of projecting their power and appearing more intimidating. Once fully tamed, the best specimens are outfitted with suits of makeshift armor, forming armored grizzlies.
