The giant capybara is an enormous version of the greater capybara (hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), another largely extinct species in the Mazes. The appearance of a giant capybara resembles that of their smaller ancestors, except for the size, which approaches that of a horse: about 5 feet tall, 5 feet 6 inches long, and weighing nearly 1000 pounds.

One of the major differences between the giant capybara and its extinct, regular counterpart is diet. Once herbivorous, the giant capybara has evolved to need an omnivorous diet, bringing it closer to the giant rat in that regard. Their primary tool and weapon of choice is their large, sharp frontal teeth, significantly larger than the giant rat's or the giant beaver's. The giant capybara will mercilessly bite, chew, and chop on anything it thinks it can extract food energy from, which often includes adventurers.

Although it isn't really aggressive by nature, the giant capybara appears to be unable to distinguish what constitutes food and what isn't until after it has bitten into it several times. However, it is able to discern whether a creature presents a threat, in which case it will become defensive and territorial, preferring to attack and bite even harder and many more times. In some cases, the giant capybara will exploit its large, broad head to perform a powerful headbutt attack, producing enough force to shatter an average human's bones. An untimely impact to the head has a good chance of killing one outright.

Despite the creature's odd tendencies, the giant capybara is actively hunted by many in the Mazes for its meat, which is considered to be a luxury. The taste is described as a cross between pork and deer venison, with more fat than the latter, but still leaner than beef.
