A cultist is a junior member of the Followers of Asica, an apocalypse cult.

Members of the cult worship Asica, a goddess of destruction. They study the cult's holy book (the Book of Asica), spreading a message of doom and apocalypse. However, they are most famous for abducting travelers and adventurers in the Uncivilized Area, using them to perform various brutal rites described in the Book in the hopes of pleasing Asica or requesting her favors. These rites include blood rituals, burning gunpowder (to form a ring of fire, a holy symbol), abductions, forced conversions, as well as torture, mutilation, and sacrifices.

Cultists are the junior members of the organization. They are either humans or halflings (youkai are not accepted into the cult), and most are aged 18 to 30. Most are recruited voluntarily, after a period of initiation lasting 6 to 8 weeks, at the end of which the recruit is tasked by a cult priest to perform an act of loyalty towards Asica. Typically, they are given a specific target (usually someone related to them, such as a family member, a romantic partner, or a close friend). To complete the act of loyalty and seal the candidate's membership into the cult, the designated target must abduct them, take them to a secret location, then perform a ritual sacrifice on them before the eyes of their cult priest. If the priest deems the ritual to be satisfactory, the initiate is officially ordained into the priest's chapter, officially becoming a Follower of Asica.

A small percentage of cultists are recruited among the cult's captured individuals, generally as part of a deal; convert and keep your life, or die in a ritual. These cultists often bear the scars and marks of their life during captivity; they are sometimes known as the "broken ones", after their physical appearance and the metaphor of having been "broken" into joining the cult.
