9x39mm is a type of ammunition for firearms. It is classified as a (R)ifle caliber, and was originally designed for the AS Val and the VSS Vintorez.
This caliber is essentially derived from 7.62x39mm, but necked up to accept a 9.25mm (0.364 inch) bullet and loaded so that a typical 9x39mm rifle would produce velocities just under the speed of sound. The combination of a large caliber rifle bullet and subsonic velocities made it ideal for use in rifles equipped with a silencer. As such, most 9x39mm firearms are either equipped with an integral silencer, or can be fitted with one.
9x39mm is typically pronounced nine by thirty-nine millimeters.
This caliber may also be known as 9x39mm Vintorez or 9mm Vintorez. It is also sometimes designated 9.2x39mm, though it has fallen into disuse.
