7.92x57mm Mauser is a type of ammunition for firearms. It is classified as a (R)ifle caliber.
Originally developed as a round-nosed projectile designated Patrone 88 (Cartridge 88, after its year of introduction, 1888), what truly became the modern incarnation of this cartridge was initially known as the S Patrone cartridge, introduced in 1903, which offered a spitzer bullet; pointed, instead of round-nosed, greatly improving the bullet's aerodynamics. Since then, all subsequent and modern variations on the cartridge have employed the same basic principles of the S Patrone cartridge.
7.92x57mm is pronounced seven point ninety-two by fifty-seven millimeters.
This caliber has been given a large amount of designations and synonyms; 7.92x57mm, 7.92mm Mauser, 7.9mm Mauser, 8x57mm Mauser, 8x57mm, 8x57 IS, 8x57 JS, 8mm Mauser, and many more.
