Elephant birds are terrifying, enormous flightless birds, thought to be related to the emu - but much, much bigger, and just as violent. Fully grown elephant birds reach heights of up to 9 feet, can weigh up to 350 lbs, and lay enormous eggs, usually colored yellowish to orange. They possess fleshy-colored heads, with large, sharp, downwards-curved gray beaks. Their plumage is usually black or slate colored, with very thick feathers, and they possess thick, ribbed gray legs equipped with large, sharp, three-toed talons.

The elephant bird is the tallest bird in the Mazes. Their sheer size also grants them traits and abilities similar to that of an emu, but bigger on every scale: They are faster, tougher, stronger, overall more dangerous. All of these traits have earned them occasional nicknames, such as "nightmare emus" or "demon birds".

Possessing a large, sharp beak, as well as a long barbed tongue, the elephant bird is equipped to rip flesh apart from prey and opponents, which it is capable of eating and digesting. Despite that, it is believed that elephant birds are not fully carnivorous but may in fact be omnivorous, sustaining themselves on whatever they can find or kill, including fresh corpses. This suggests that the elephant bird may have some common links with scavenger birds, with which they frequently fight (and usually, effortlessly manage to drive off).
