The Black Widowmaker is one of several species of giant bugs native to the Mazes, and one of four that are arachnids rather than insects. It appears to be an enormous version of the black widow spider (latrodectus mactans), easily recognizable by its jet-black bodies and the red, usually hourglass-shaped marks on the top side of its abdomen. Like its cousin, the giant tarantula, the Black Widowmaker is a very light creature for its size, with an average weight of about 35 pounds, despite averaging at about 4 feet 7 inches in height and 5 feet 3 inches in length.

Like the giant tarantula. the Black Widowmaker is primarily known for its speed instead of its layers of armor. While it does not beat the giant tarantula's top speed, it can still achieve an average crawling speed of about 42 ft/s (about ~29 mph), with occasional bursts of speed of up to 62 ft/s (~42 mph).

What they do have over the giant tarantula is even more terrifying bites, helped by far deadlier venom. Each bite from a Black Widowmaker injects an enormous quantity of neurotoxins into its target's bloodstream. It is often cited in older literature that it takes "no more than five bites to kill a grown man with the venom alone," and the Black Widowmaker is capable of delivering all five bites in less than five seconds, or approximately one bite per second.

While they are bigger and less sensitive to pain than giant tarantulae, the best weapons to kill a Black Widowmaker are the same as those recommended for a giant tarantula - powerful firearms with expanding ammunition - you just might need a few more shots.

Like all members of the Bugs category, the origin of these creatures is unknown. Because they lack any magical or supernatural elements, it has been theorized that these creatures are the result of some type of past scientific experiment gone wrong, and that they have since escaped and become a species native to the Uncivilized Area.
