The kappa (Youkai-go: 河童, pronounced kah-pah, lit. "River child") is a creature belonging to the Youkai category. Youkai are both sapient and sedentary, making them one of the civilized species of the Mazes.
Attacks and techniques
This creature has four attacks: Punch, Kick, Bite, and Mist ball.
Punch and kick
Identical to the basic unarmed combat punch and kick. Maximum attacks per turn is determined by the Martial arts combat skill level.

Spec-Aqua | Ranged | 1 | 9 | N | N/A |
- Inflicts no Pain or Limb Damage.
- The purpose of this attack is to generate a mist cloud on the Side in which it lands. The attack does not need to be aimed at any particular creature, as the cloud will affect every creature on the same Side.
Mist cloud
Mist clouds are a monster equivalent to smoke clouds, such as those generated by smoke grenades. They have the following properties:
- Engulfs an entire Side of the battlespace, affecting every creature inside.
- Lasts for 2 turns, at the end of which the cloud dissipates, and the effects listed below cease.
- All creatures inside the cloud suffer from a FT+2 malus. As a Spec-Aqua attack, it also causes Water-soaked. These hazards cannot be mitigated by the Immunity to gases effect, such as one given by a gas mask.
- All creatures outside the cloud suffer from a IR+2 malus, if aiming at creatures inside the cloud.
Dice results:
- A critical success will double the length of the mist cloud's life (4 turns instead of 2 turns).
- A regular success will result in the normal effects of the mist cloud occurring.
- A failure still results in a mist cloud occurring, but for only 1 turn instead of the normal amount.
- A critical failure results in the mist ball disintegrating before it can create a mist cloud, thus failing entirely.
Equipment
A kappa's equipment is determined by their occupation.
Other information
Skills: All kappa have natural skills, however their occupation may also grant them additional skills. If natural and occupational skill levels were to conflict, the highest level prevails. The natural skills are as follows:
- Non-combat skills: Master (Crafting, Repairing), Unskilled (all other non-combat skills)
Overview

Kappa are one of a number of youkai species. At first glance, they appear to be short humanoids with colorful skin, partially resembling toadpeople. However, they possess many distinctive traits. Their skin color is usually on the spectrum between blue, green, and yellow, and is notable for not having any human color tones at all. On very rare occasions (less than 1% of the population), certain individuals are born with completely matte black skin; such individuals are simply referred to as black kappa (黒河童, kuro-kappa). Because of this, kappa consider the color black to be lucky.
On most parts of their body, kappa skin has a scaly texture, resembling that of a tortoise. These scales are larger and harder on their backs than it is on the rest of their body, which further reinforces their turtle-like appearance. Most kappa have very colorful hair as well, the most common colors being shades of blue and green. Kappa also possess pointed teeth, capable of tearing through flesh with ease, capable of delivering the occasional nasty bite. Although large bodies of water are very rare in the Mazes, they are perhaps the only sapient species that is capable of swimming and remaining underwater for any significant periods of time.
Kappa are among the shortest species of youkai, with an average height of just 4 feet 7 inches. Their constitution is usually very slim, bordering on lithe, with a very low average weight of just 90 pounds for both males and females.
If kappa could be described using one word, it would be ingenuity. Kappa have a near-supernatural understanding of physics, mechanics and machinery, and are practically natural-born engineers. It is therefore no surprise that the vast majority of youkai engineers belong to this species. Besides the various fields of engineering, kappa are also known for being competent weaponsmiths, with certain legendary weapons in the Mazes being kappa-made creations.
Though they may be short and seem unsuited for combat, their intelligence and their natural affinity for technology more than compensates for any natural weaknesses they may possess. As a common saying goes, it is very unwise to underestimate a kappa.
