  • This attack is a monster equivalent of the Charge ability.
  • On a successful hit, inflicts Venom +6 and an accuracy-decreasing effect, causing FT +1 for 6 turns (effect length stacks with Poison bite).
    • To use this attack, the target must not be on the same Side - it is impossible to charge a target within Melee range.
    • When using this attack, the creature will move into the target's Side, and should finish their turn on that Side.

The Phantom Spider is one of several species of giant bugs native to the Mazes, and one of four that are arachnids rather than insects. Of the four, it is the largest and the strangest colored. Although it is physically reminiscent of what a giant version of the atrax robustus might look like, its coloration is totally different from the regularly-sized spider. Whereas normal atrax robustus are all-black, Phantom Spiders are pale blue, with semi-translucent and bioluminescent chitin, emitting a bluish glow in the dark. They are much larger than the next-biggest giant spider in the mazes, the Black Widowmaker. On average, they stand at 5 feet 7 inches, are about 6 feet long, and weigh 60 to 65 pounds.

Although it is nowhere near as fast as the giant tarantula, with an average speed of 30 ft/s (~20 mph) and occasional bursts of up to 56 ft/s (~38 mph), nor is its venom the most lethal (the Black Widowmaker is slightly deadlier), the Phantom Spider remains a unique, dangerous threat. Every bite injects a unique neurotoxin that can cause instant, powerful spells of dizziness, intended to disorient targets and render them less able to fight back. Like the Black Widowmaker, the Phantom Spider will readily pummel targets with its legs, which it can deliver with even more force and speed.

If these methods of attack weren't enough, the Phantom Spider is also famous for its tendency to jump and lunge its entire body at targets suddenly. However, instead of using its body as a battering ram, the objective is to surprise the target by pinning them down to the floor (or the wall) and stab it with both of its chelicerae at once, delivering a double dose of venom. It will typically follow the lunge with more pummeling or biting, until the target ceases resisting - at which point it will usually begin eating it or whatever softest parts it can reach.

While no part of the Phantom Spider is armored, this creature is notoriously resistant to harm, to the point of being almost entirely immune to pain. If you must fight, alternative approaches - or outright devastating more powerful weapons, such as high explosives - are recommended.

Like all members of the Bugs category, the origin of these creatures is unknown. Because they lack any magical or supernatural elements, it has been theorized that these creatures are the result of some type of past scientific experiment gone wrong, and that they have since escaped and become a species native to the Uncivilized Area.
