An activist squadleader is a youkai working for Youkai Nation's armed branch.
This occupation is reserved for youkai, typically residents of one of the towns controlled by the Youkai Nation. Although non-youkai can support the Nation in other ways, they cannot join the armed elements, and therefore, cannot become activist fighters.
Officially, activist fighters make up the fledgling defense forces of the Youkai Nation. Their job is to protect towns and roads under their control from monster invasions, fulfilling the role of the Maze Military within their area of influence. Frequently, however, they engage the Military in battle through various sporadic conflicts, generally around the border of the Nation's area of influence, where Soldiers looking to probe through youkai defenses or patrolling for monsters are the most likely to encounter patrolling activists.
The Youkai Nation's armed forces don't have an official name (they are simply referred to as Activists) and have an extremely simple hierarchy; activists organize themselves in simple cells, led by one or multiple squadleaders, each being in charge of several fighters, ranging from a dozen to as many as 40. Activist cells are known to exist in every town controlled by the Youkai Nation, but there are many unconfirmed rumors of "dormant" or "sleeper" cells based in other towns, particularly neutral, unaligned towns.
