Overview

The firelizard is a large lizardine creature which resembles a small, wingless dragon. They reach an average length of 7 feet snout-to-tail, and they can weigh up to 400 pounds.
These creatures can be differentiated easily from all other reptiles in the Mazes by their scale color, usually shades of green (ranging from lime to dark green). They also possess four prominent canine fangs, which are capable of delivering a potent venom, but also and most importantly, they are capable of breathing fire. This firebreath attack is of markedly lower intensity than the fireblasts of a dragon, but it is still dangerous and quite lethal.
Because these creatures resemble dragons and can even breathe fire like dragons, firelizards have been initially classified as a type of dragon and known as wingless dragons. They were then renamed and reclassified into their own category under the name of proto-dragon. After further advances in technology allowed for better genetic analysis, they were renamed once again to their current moniker, it has been revealed that firelizards share more genetic traits with reptiles than anything else, but that it may well be the "missing link" between reptiles and dragons. Current theories suggest that dragons have evolved from firelizards and gained wings at some point, then were separated from the original creatures.
Firelizard meat is known for being tough and chewy, just like dragon meat, but the comparison stops there. Where dragon meat actually has a recognizable taste and texture, firelizard meat has a rubbery, nondescript taste considered to be worthless for cooking, and which should only be considered during survival situations, if there is nothing better available. These creatures are not sought after by hunters for their meat, nor are their skin and scales considered valuable, despite its mild bullet-resistant properties. They are considered to be dangerous pests that should be eliminated on sight, lest they attack other people and set them or their property on fire.
