"This spunky semi-automatic rifle was meant to serve as an interim rifle between the bolt-action MAS-36, and a hypothetical full-power select-fire rifle. However, it was never succeeded by such a weapon, being instead directly replaced with an intermediate-caliber combat rifle, the FAMAS. This version of the MAS-49 is chambered in 7.62 NATO instead of its original 7.5x54mm French chambering."
