.460 Rowland is a type of ammunition for firearms. It is classified as a (P)istol caliber, and was originally designed for 1911 conversions.
.460 Rowland is pronounced four sixty Rowland. The cartridge is named after its original designer, Johnny Ray Rowland. It is essentially a slightly elongated .45 ACP; the case length was increased by 1/16" inch (~1.58mm). This seemingly small change allows .460 Rowland to be loaded at up to near-.44 Magnum power. The use of a muzzle brake is more than recommended to tame the extreme recoil this cartridge can generate.
Although in real life, Johnny Rowland himself has stated it is safe to chamber and fire .45 ACP ammunition in .460 Rowland converted firearms provided that they are properly configured (recoil springs in particular; see his website's FAQ at question 16), I do not consider it possible to do so in the game unless that firearm is a revolver (similar to a .357 Magnum revolver shooting .38 Special) to keep game mechanics streamlined. GMs and players who wish to ignore this rule and make it possible are free to do so if they feel it would enhance their enjoyment of the game.
This caliber may also be known as .460 Row, .460 Rwd, or simply .460. There is no formal metric designation for this caliber, but if one existed, it would likely be 11.43x24mm, although this is not a recommended designation, as it is very close to .45 ACP's own metric designation.
Compatibility
Base weapons
This is one of the so-called rare calibers. There are no base weapons chambered in this caliber.
However, one firearm may act as a .460 Rowland revolver in certain circumstances:
- The Taurus Raging Judge Magnum M513 may act as a .460 Rowland revolver, when loaded with a .460 Rowland/.45 ACP 5-round moon clip. See the weapon's page for more details.
Barrel length groups
The reference barrel length belongs to the group listed in italics.
Group name | Barrel length range | Damage multiplier |
---|---|---|
Handgun | Up to 6" | 1.0x |
Long handgun | 6.1" - 10.9" | 1.2x |
Carbine | 11" and up | 1.3x |
Retail information
.460 Rowland ammunition can be purchased in gun shops and weapon shops in boxes of 50 rounds or bulk cans of 500 rounds.
The following brands and projectile types are available in retail:
Brand name | Composition | Available projectile types |
---|---|---|
Standard | Reg/SP | FMJ (1.0x) Lead (0.5x) JHP (1.5x) |
Personal Defense | Reg/+P | FMJ (1.1x) JHP (1.65x) |
The multipliers listed correspond to the value multipliers to cost of ammunition provided by powder type, pressure level, and projectile type. They are included on this table as a convenience, in order to tell at a glance the cost of a given brand and projectile combination.
