Pantherians (Homo ferus ex panthera) are one of the species of feral animal-people (scientific designation homo ferus), species that have evolved to grow humanoid traits and sufficient intelligence to use tools and weapons, but have remained largely 'feral'; they inhabit small, hidden communities in the UA, or are nomadic. Usually, they also do They are not considered to be a sapient species, as most aren't able to speak any understandable a recognizable language, though there instead speaking in unrecognizable dialects, which seem to vary between species, sometimes between individual groups of tribes within the same species. Biologists believe that feral animal-people are some rare exceptions"edge cases" of sapience; they may very well be self-aware, with the potential to one day develop the ability to speak a commonly-used language. Rare individuals are believed to have learned enough Common or Youkai-go to understand it and may even speak or write it.
Although more genetically similar to jaguars than to lynxes, pantherians can be considered to be a feral version of the feline halfling, being seemingly much more animalistic in behavior and cognitive capabilities. InterstinglyInterestingly, just like with jaguars, 1 in 5 pantherians have completely black fur instead of the usual golden spotted jaguar fur. These individuals are sometimes referred to as black pantherians.
Another interesting trait is that they are biologically compatible with feline halflings, and by extension, may be also able to mate with other sapients such as humans, other halflings, and youkai. However, there remain critical differences between the sapient halflings and these creatures, which has helped scientists classify pantherians as a different species; most notably, their carnivore diet, unlike feline halflings which are true omnivores.
Similarly to most felines, pantherians are particularly fast and agile, capable of running at much greater speeds than average humans. They also possess similar average heights and weights compared to humans, at respectively 5 foot 8 inches and 150 lbs.
Similarly to other feral animal-people species, the exact origin of these creatures is not known; they have only started appearing in the Mazes around early Era 7, and are suspected to have been the result of some type of past scientific experiment gone wrong, and that they have since escaped into the Uncivilized Area and become a native species.
