The yamawaro (Youkai-go: 山童, pronounced yah-mah-wah-row, lit. "Mountain child") is a creature belonging to the Youkai category. Youkai are both sapient and sedentary, making them one of the civilized species of the Mazes.

Attacks and techniques

This creature has four attacks: Punch, Kick, Bite, and Storm ball.

Punch and kick

Identical to the basic unarmed combat punch and kick. Maximum attacks per turn is determined by the Martial arts combat skill level.

Bite

Damage type Range MAPT IS LDV Pain (C1) Pain (C2) Pain (A1) Pain (A2) Pain (A3) Pain (A4) Pain (A5)
Sharp Melee 1 3 +0 25% 23% 20% 16% 13% 6% 1%
  • The amount of damage this attack deals is not affected by the creature's Strength.

Storm ball

Damage type Range MAPT IS LDV Pain (All ACs)
Special Ranged 1 9 N N/A
  • Inflicts no Pain or Limb Damage.
  • Using this technique will increase Fatigue by 25.0%.
  • The purpose of this attack is to generate a storm cloud on the Side in which it lands. The attack does not need to be aimed at any particular creature, as the cloud will affect every creature on the same Side.

Storm cloud

Storm clouds are a unique, monster-exclusive cloud. The storm ball attack produces a large, dark cloud of gas reminiscent of a storm cloud in the sky. Just like one, it is capable of producing lightning arcs. They have the following properties:

  • Engulfs an entire Side of the battlespace, affecting every creature inside.
  • Lasts for 2 turns, at the end of which the cloud dissipates, and the effects listed below cease.
  • All creatures inside the cloud suffer from a FT+2 malus. This hazard cannot be mitigated by the Immunity to gases effect, such as one given by a gas mask; as it works like a smoke cloud, which obfuscates instead of damaging.
  • All creatures outside the cloud suffer from a IR+2 malus, if aiming at creatures inside the cloud.
  • Before the end of each turn, all creatures engulfed in a storm cloud are struck once by a lightning arc. The strike is instantaneous and deals Spec-Elec damage (LDV +4, 75% Pain).

Dice results:

  • A critical success will double the length of the storm cloud's life (4 turns instead of 2 turns).
  • A regular success will result in the normal effects of the storm cloud occurring.
  • A failure still results in a storm cloud occurring, but for only 1 turn instead of the normal amount.
  • A critical failure results in the storm ball disintegrating before it can create a storm cloud, thus failing entirely.

Equipment

A yamawaro's equipment is determined by their occupation.

Other information

Skills: All yamawaro have natural skills, however their occupation may also grant them additional skills. If natural and occupational skill levels were to conflict, the highest level prevails. The natural skills are as follows:

  • Non-combat skills: Master (Handloading, Repairing), Unskilled (all other non-combat skills)

Yamawaro are one of a number of youkai species and a sister species to the kappa. Like them, they appear, at first glance, to be short humanoids akin to toadpeople. Unlike them and kappa, their skin color tends to be shades of dark green, browns, tans, or even black, reminiscent of forest and woodland colors. On very rare occasions (less than 1% of the population), certain individuals are born with completely matte-white, alabaster skin; they are known as white yamawaro (白い山童, shiroi yamawaro) or colloquially, yamashiro (山白). Consequently, the color white is considered auspicious among yamawaro.

If a kappa's skin could be described as scaly and tortoise-like, the yamawaro's skin is better described as soft, spongy, and naturally producing layers of thin but slimy body oil. This property is thought to keep the yamawaro's body naturally hydrated, but has the tendency to attract all kinds of dirt, grime, and contaminants. Consequently, yamawaro have the not completely undeserved reputation of having strong scent or body odors, often enhanced by the fragrance of whatever they manipulated in the past few days - and worsened by their natural aversion to actual bodies of moving water, showering, or bathing. Like their sister species, yamawaro have pointed teeth capable of delivering painful bites.

The typical yamawaro is slightly taller and heavier than a kappa, with an average height of 4 feet 10 inches and an average weight of about 105 pounds for both sexes.

Like kappa, they are also regarded as natural-born engineers with a near-supernatural grasp of many fields of science and engineering. Yamawaro tend to choose occupations prioritizing applied sciences and are considered more action-oriented. Many take up jobs involving the development and production of explosives and ammunition, to the point that the entire species is reputed for producing some of the finest handloaders and ammunition scientists of the Mazes.

While they aren't much taller, stronger, or more resistant to damage than their kappa siblings, yamawaro are more likely to take up combat-oriented jobs, especially if there is an opportunity to test a new load, or simply to watch stuff blow up. It can be said the yamawaro are enjoyers of explosions.
