The Syndicate leadership is a general term referring to the small group of people that are considered to be in the upper echelons of the Yatela Crime Syndicate's hierarchy.

Organization

The Syndicate's leadership is composed of the Don, his Consigliere, and a number of Underbosses (also simply called Bosses) that nominally work for the Don, but usually have a certain degree of autonomy.

Currently, the Syndicate's leadership is entirely composed of members of the Yatela family; the Consigliere is the Don's first cousin, and all of the underbosses are siblings of the Don. Each also runs their own town, with the exception of the Consigliere, whose role is to be a trusted advisor to the Don.

  • Don: Michael Yatela, in charge of the town of Greening
  • Consigliere: Vance Valaso
  • Underbosses: Michael Yatela's siblings, each in charge of the other Syndicate towns: Antonio "Tony" Yatela, Soren Yatela, Nicky Yatela, Lenny Yatela

Vance Valaso is the first cousin and the consigliere of Don Yatela.

Bio

Born in 665 in Garica Block to Attilio Yatela (brother of Don Arsenio), and an unknown mother, believed by the Police to be a retired stripper and escort. Valaso was raised almost entirely by his father as well as a large collection of what he came to call "uncles"; his mother disappeared under unknown circumstances in 668, leaving him with next to no memories of her. His father Attilio was an old but respected caporegime, primarily involved in the redlight business, as one of the people in charge of overseeing and protecting the Club 380 strip club and its personnel. The "uncles" were, of course, other members of the Syndicate, who rapidly exposed Valaso to the realities of life in a town controlled by the Syndicate. He also occasionally received the visit of his cousins, the Yatela siblings, with whom he maintained positive relations. By the age of 20, he was involved in a weapon theft and fencing business in the Eastern Zone and was already wanted by the Police for grand thievery.

In 690, both Don Arsenio and his brother Attilio were found dead, leaving the Don's consigliere, Ciro Veleno, to take over the Syndicate. Initially, this was supposed to be temporary; Michael Yatela, the Don's eldest son, was meant to be the successor. However, Veleno clung to the reins of power, becoming the Syndicate's new leader, for a time at least.

Following the death of his father, Valaso was promoted to the rank of caporegime. He subsequently quit the fencing business and took over as Club 380's Syndicate member in charge, where he remained for three uneventful years. In 693, Valaso answered the call of his cousin, Michael Yatela, participating in his coup against Veleno. Together with Michael, his siblings, and several other associates and enforcers, Valaso participated in the assault on Greening, which resulted in the deaths of Veleno's entire security personnel. He stood by Michael's side when Veleno was publicly executed, witnessed his declaring to the Greening townspeople that he was the new Don, and was selected to be his new consigliere.

Upon becoming the new consigliere of the Syndicate, Valaso moved out of Garica Block and ceased overseeing Club 380 operations so that he could focus full-time on assisting what he now affectionately calls "Cousin Don".

Personality

Valaso describes himself as a very family-oriented man, genuinely considering the Syndicate to be his extended family. He is known for his friendly and approachable demeanor, as well as his attitude to life, best described as "cautious but optimistic". Risk-averse, he prefers safe and reliable approaches to business, believing that big shows of violence and displays of power should be last resorts, not standard procedure.

Although Valaso often states he dreams of finding the perfect wife and making many children, he was notorious for going through two to three different girlfriends per month. This continued until he became consigliere, at which point and under Michael's advice, he was asked to "stop fooling around". To this day, at the age of 39, he remains single - and particularly despises being reminded of it.

Valaso admires his "Cousin Don" Michael, idolizing him to the point of calling him his "favorite superhero".

He is known for his rather luxurious taste, particularly when it comes to food. His favorite dish is reportedly giant tortoise steak, flame-broiled, and lightly salted.

Antonio "Tony" Yatela is the second of the Yatela siblings, as well as the boss in charge of Baden Town.

Bio

Antonio Yatela was born in Greening, just a little over three years after Michael, to Don Arsenio and the same unknown mother as Michael. As the first of Michael's younger brothers, and the shortest of the five siblings (with an adult height of five feet six inches), Tony endured the most bullying relative to his size - and enjoyed the most protection from his older brother. Don Yatela often claims that when both of them were still children, he taught Tony how to shoot his first handgun, so that he could defend himself and put an end to the disrespect.

His height remained a very sensitive subject throughout his life; the Police believes that several murders were committed against people simply for having made fun or disrespected him because of his height, with one confirmed incident described below.

One particularly notable incident in 687 involved Tony Yatela meeting a representative of a smaller gang in Intersection 23 for organizing a deal of some sort (the exact nature of the deal was never uncovered). The meeting went sour, and the representative uttered an insult - "Tiny Yatela" - before attempting to leave. Tony was reportedly so furious and enraged, that he unholstered his handgun and murdered the representative in broad view. The brief gunfight that ensued resulted in 4 dead - all of them belonging to the smaller gang. Although the events were described as a careless act of anger that attracted the Police's attention, it also solidified Tony's reputation as a short-fused, dangerous man who will not take disrespect quietly.

After Lenny became an enforcer for the Syndicate, shortly after his 18th birthday, Michael requested to his father that all five siblings be part of the same crew. Under Consigliere Veleno's influence, the request was denied and each sibling was instead forced to work in a different town. Tony was sent to Baden Town and started a new business there, which was largely specialized in organizing hit crews and executing murders on behalf of the Syndicate.

In 693, Tony responded to his brother's call to take down Ciro Veleno, providing most if not all of the backup associates and enforcers. After Veleno was publicly executed and Michael took the reins of power in the Syndicate, he was promoted to underboss, taking over Baden Town's Syndicate operations. To this day, he continues organizing hits and assassinations on behalf of the Syndicate, being considered the "hit expert" of the family.

Personality

Arguably the least sociable of the five siblings, Tony is best-described as "short-fused", with a perpetual scowl on his face, seemingly ready to blow up at any minute and for any reason. The attitude is largely attributed to decades of height-related bullying, though some of his subordinates believe that he always had anger management issues even without it.

Due to his temper, the affection Michael has for him, and his talent for orchestrating hits, he is sometimes described as the "dragon" of the Yatela siblings.

Although he seems unapproachable, giving off the impression of liking no-one and nothing, those few who have managed to break the ice describe him as "surprisingly nerdy", with a passion for reading and writing, a love for libraries. He is a fan of the Angels and Oceans and Doctor Brutal book series and is rumored to be a prolific fan-fiction author, with over 65 works mostly set in the Doctor Brutal universe.

Soren Yatela is the third of the Yatela siblings, as well as the boss in charge of Garica Block.

Bio

Like his older siblings, Soren Yatela was born in Greening, to the same parents; Don Arsenio and their unknown mother. Possibly influenced by his position as the middle child, Soren always felt as though his siblings all have stronger and more colorful personalities than his own. In turn, whenever he was not breaking up fights or trying to be the voice of reason of the five siblings, he spent most of his time alone, preferring to spend time with machinery and electronics than he did with people.

Originally, Soren was not interested in the Syndicate's business, aiming instead for a career in the Engineering Corps. In 682, he enrolled as an adult student on his 18th birthday, completing the engineering student course in a record 16 months (normally, it requires 2 or 3 years of studies). By 685, Soren became a full-fledged engineer, joining the Workshop Crew and running the workshop in Greening for about three years.

After Lenny became an enforcer for the Syndicate, shortly after his 18th birthday, Michael requested to his father that all five siblings be part of the same crew. Under Consigliere Veleno's influence, the request was denied and each sibling was instead forced to work in a different town. Soren was sent far away, into Garica Block, in the Eastern Zone. It was there that he met a cousin, Vance Valaso. Valaso was a caporegime primarily involved with overseeing and running the local strip club, Club 380. Soren, admitting to his lack of social skills, told his cousin that he had no interest in the redlight industry, wishing not to work there. Instead, he offered to start another type of business: a legitimate engineering workshop, which Garica Block lacked, and the profits of which he would use to pay tribute to Valaso, as is required by Syndicate rules. Valaso accepted, and Soren opened the first workshop in the town's history. Most of the workshop's customers were members of the Syndicate; most of those that weren't, were usually Club 380 escorts or other civilians working in a Syndicate-controlled business.

Following the failed hit against Michael, and his subsequent temporary disappearance, Soren was allegedly the first person Michael called while in hiding. It is widely believed that Soren planned the retaliation against Ciro Veleno, using each of the siblings' connections and abilities. It was him who organized Michael's leadership, Tony's experience with raising hit squads, Nicky's funds from the casino operation to purchase equipment, and Lenny's combat skills into a coherent plan, which eventually resulted in their assault on Greening in 693. Although he formally participated, it is believed he did not do much shooting or fighting of his own.

After Veleno was publicly executed and Michael took the reins of power in the Syndicate, he was promoted to underboss. When it became clear that Valaso would quit Garica Block to focus full-time on assisting the new Don, Soren took over the Syndicate's operations in Garica Block, leaving the workshop he had founded to be taken over by a younger subordinate. Despite his public association with the Yatela Syndicate, the Engineering Corps has not officially disavowed him, making Soren officially and technically still an engineer, with technical expertise in various fields, such as mechanics, electronics, gunsmithing, handloading, computing, and programming.

Personality

Soren is, first and foremost, a rational person, only interested in the factual and the measurable. His level-headed approach to every situation makes him seem like the voice of reason in most situations; though it is also easy to confuse his apparent detachment to emotionlessness.

While he often readily admits that he has neither the "sheer charm nor strong character" that his siblings can have, he does view himself as the most rational. His siblings consider him by far to be the most intelligent of the five, to the point of receiving various nicknames related to his intelligence, such as "Genius", "Nerd", "Egghead", or - Michael's favorite - "Mister Brains". Because he wears glasses, he is also sometimes called "Four-Eyed Soren", although he disapproves of the nickname.

Socially awkward, he is well-known for having difficulties dealing with groups of people, preferring to remain withdrawn and limiting his social interactions as much as possible; unless one belongs to his "trust circle", comprised of a very small group of people; his siblings, his cousin Vance, and a select amount of friends and Garica Block locals.

In his spare time, Soren is an avid gamer, fond of vertical shoot'em'ups, platformers, and first-person shooters, having developed mods for a number of his favorite games, such as Razz Rackhare, Amethyst 9000, Boom and Tremors.

Nicky Yatela is the fourth of the Yatela siblings, as well as the boss in charge of Lenox Corner.

Bio

Originally, Nicky was born as Nicola Yatela, as the only daughter of Don Arsenio. Growing up as one of the younger siblings in a mafia environment, Nicky idolized their older siblings and their father, wishing nothing more than to be one of them. However, the criminal world is stereotypically unkind to women, and this fact was not lost on them; Nicky wished not to be merely any old enforcer's woman - they wished to be an enforcer, and to one day take an active role in the family business, just like their siblings. After puberty hit, Nicky began imitating their brothers' mannerisms and dress codes, abandoning traditionally feminine clothing in favor of tuxedos and pants, wishing to be referred to as "Nicky" rather than "Nicola", thinking the nickname to be more like a proper gangster's name.

In 684, upon turning 18, Nicky made the formal request to become a made man to their father, Don Arsenio. To the surprise of the other siblings, he accepted; but proposed a seemingly impossible task: to travel all the way to Lenox Corner in the Western Zone, find a particular person with gambling debts (he owed over Parallar symbol.png200 000 and went into hiding), and do whatever it takes to shake him down of his money and bring it back to the family. Whatever happened to the debtor was up to Nicky. Don Arsenio was not expecting success, intending for it to be a lesson on how "Syndicate life is not for women". Nicky departed Greening the next day. After not giving signs of life for a little over a month, Nicky traveled back to Greening, with a special delivery for the old Don: four suitcases, each containing Parallar symbol.png50 000 in gold coins, as well as a bag containing the severed head of the debtor. Official details on what exactly transpired in Lenox Corner that year are very scarce, but it appears that Nicky had gained the nickname of "Headhunter".

Having proven their worth to the family, the Don had no choice but to accept Nicky's request of becoming an enforcer for the family. However, for Nicky, it seemed that a month of disappearance had led to more discovery than just finding the person they were sent out for, and requested from that point on to be referred to as a man, complete with he/him pronouns. Afterward, Nicky promptly returned to work in Greening, working various jobs for the Syndicate.

After his younger brother Lenny officially became an enforcer for the Syndicate in 688, shortly after his 18th birthday, Michael requested to his father that all five siblings be part of the same crew. Under Consigliere Veleno's influence, the request was denied and each sibling was instead forced to work in a different town. Mentioning Nicky's past work in the city, he was sent even further away than Soren: back to Lenox Corner, this time tasked with overseeing and managing security at the local casino, the Blue Diamond, under another local capo and a new crew; Manfredo "Fat Freddy" Fattore. Fat Freddy's crew specialized in casino security, debt collection, and protection rackets. Although it only lasted for about two years, Nicky often has stories to tell about his stint as casino security, recalling many instances of booting drunk people out, beating up indebted customers whenever they refused to pay, using his reputation as the "Headhunter" to make it clear what would happen if they didn't pay up.

In 690, when Don Arsenio died, Nicky was vocal in his disapproval for Ciro Veleno's "temporary" takeover, demanding that he begin the succession proceedings immediately and let Michael become the next Don. In retaliation, Ciro sent men to Lenox Corner to make sure that Nicky never leaves the town, for any reason whatsoever, and to use force if necessary. Realizing what Veleno was doing, Nicky orchestrated his disappearance, faking a situation with his capo at the Blue Diamond casino. The official story was that Nicky had failed to pay tribute and was skimming off the top; therefore, Fat Freddy had to give punishment behind the doors. With the complicity of the local hospital, the "wounded" Nicky was carted off to the hospital for the treatment of "wounds". In reality, he was transported to the back of a prepared hospital bedroom, where he hid for several hours. In this bedroom were stashed a set of clothing and makeup: namely, a flamboyant sundress, high heels, lipstick, and blonde hair dye. There also was a suitcase full of money; Fat Freddy told Nicky to "use these funds to take the snake down", referring to Veleno. The plan was to walk out of Lenox Corner in extremely feminine clothing, to fool Veleno's guards into believing that Nicky was either still in the hospital or dead. The plan worked, and Nicky went into hiding in Viris Area, living with his younger brother Lenny. Although he had ditched the clothes, Nicky reportedly continued dying his hair blonde, out of fear that he could be recognized by Veleno's men.

In 693, Nicky answered the call of his older brother Michael to take down Ciro Veleno. Using the funds provided by his old capo, topped off by more funds out of pocket, Nicky purchased armor, weapons, ammunition, and other equipment for Michael's hit squad, so that they could assault Greening with the best and latest weapons. After Veleno was publicly executed and Michael took the reins of power in the Syndicate, he was promoted directly from the rank of enforcer to that of underboss, taking over Lenox Corner's operations; much to the amusement of his old capo Fat Freddy, who remarked it was the first time in his life he'd seen someone who once took orders from him, suddenly become the one to give him orders.

Personality

Very headstrong and pragmatic, if Nicky wants something, few forces in the Mazes that will stop him from getting it. Having fought to reshape and redefine himself as a leading, decision-making figure, he is particularly proud and quite protective of his identity and his status.

Nicky is highly respected by his siblings and his crews in Lenox Corner; in the words of his old capo, Fat Freddy, his reputation in the town "practically speaks for itself". However, other members of the Syndicate have not always accepted Nicky's choices or identity. Unfortunately for Nicky's detractors, disrespect is not something he tolerates, especially if the disrespect is aimed at his gender. To him, it is even worse than trying to skip on paying debts; those who try are often punished by brutal torture, if not death. This inflexible attitude has further fueled his reputation as Lenox's Headhunter, with some saying that he owns a basement full of the preserved, severed heads of debtors and detractors. Perhaps intentionally, the existence of this basement was never confirmed nor denied.

Having spent many years in Lenox Corner working at or near the Blue Diamond Casino, Nicky became fond of gambling and casino games; reportedly, his favorite game is Blackjack. However, he dislikes betting large amounts of money, and he has a particular (if understandable) hatred for those who are addicted to gambling as a means to get rich quick, as they often end up becoming targets of his for debt collection.

Nicky is a known fan of funk and disco, regularly appearing as a guest on the FunkeMeUp 98.6 radio station.

Lenny Yatela is the last and youngest of the Yatela siblings, as well as the boss in charge of Viris Area.

Bio

Born when his oldest brother Michael was already twelve, Lenny grew up with the typical insecurities and expectations faced by youngest siblings; not being given the same attention as his older siblings, and always being considered the youngest and therefore the least mature. Most of his teenage years were spent imitating what he felt were his older siblings' best traits. At the age of 16, he was admonished by Michael for imitating every last one of his mannerisms, asking why he's trying to copy him so much. Lenny replied that all he wished was to prove himself, thinking that all he needed to do was to be like his brothers. Michael responded that he'd have to prove his worth to the Syndicate the second he turned 18. If he could do it, then Michael promised in exchange that he would do everything in his power to ensure Lenny would have a crew to work with.

In 688, shortly after Lenny's 18th birthday, he traveled from Greening to Baden Town, in search of work to do. He initially asked his brother Tony for help, wanting to be part of one of his hit squads, but Tony refused, responding that he was too young and too inexperienced to be killing people on his behalf. So Lenny decided to find work on his own, traveling to the far-away town of Viris Area, in the Northern Zone. Although nominally under the control of the Syndicate, the town was not doing well, bringing little profit or usefulness. After visiting the town, Lenny found that there was a large, unused warehouse facility that saw very little use. Pretending that he was here on official business for his older brothers, he gathered a crew of volunteers and informed the mayor, an aging capo, that he was going to renovate and reopen the warehouse facility, to try and turn it into a profitable venture. The aging capo was running out of ideas on how to continue paying tribute, so he called the Don himself, assuming that Lenny was an enforcer already, requesting that the young man be part of his crew so that he could resume paying proper tribute to the Syndicate.

Don Arsenio's response was one of surprise - his 18-year-old son was not even an associate yet! Pleased to hear that he'd taken initiative to work for the Syndicate, however, the Don responded that Lenny needs to "first meet him for a formality"; he'd be allowed to come back and work in Viris Area afterward. The "formality", held at the end of the year, was a quite important one; the Don would be making Lenny, officially making him an enforcer.

Upon learning that Lenny had worked his way into the family as well and had just become a made man of his own, Michael attempted to make good on his promise to Lenny and requested from his father that he and his brothers be part of the same crew, with himself as the capo and his siblings as his enforcers. Although Don Arsenio initially warmed up to the idea, his consigliere, Ciro Veleno, was staunchly opposed to it, instead suggesting to the old Don that each sibling be separated and sent to work in different towns, giving each sibling the objective of forming and running successful crews, so that they could each prove themselves useful to the Syndicate and not simply rely on their family bonds. Convinced by the advice, Don Arsenio denied Michael's request and had all five siblings separated.

Lenny was simply sent back to Viris Area, but it didn't matter much to him; the decision allowed him to get started with the warehouse business. There, he formally joined the old capo's crew, gathered a small crew, then began renovation work. Months of cleaning, rebuilding, restoring to condition ensued. A lot of old objects were also discovered - most of which was junk or unusable, but some were reportedly locked crates and containers, the contents of which are said to be known only to Lenny himself. After the discovery of these boxes, Lenny's work seemingly accelerated; his crew doubled in size, he gained more independence and spent ever more money into the warehouse, investing in state-of-the-art security doors for the existing storage units, and even hiring the help of the Engineering Corps to expand the facility, expanding the corridor, building two more storage units, and equipping them with the same security doors. Inside the storage units, Lenny invested in storage shelves and reinforced lockboxes and containers.

By Triema of 689, the renovation and expansion work was complete, and the Viris Area warehousing facility was finally open. For a price, the facility's purpose offered secure safekeeping of objects of value that could not be trusted to banks. By 690, the facility quickly imposed itself as the ideal place for black marketers to keep their inventory before resale, provided they paid the rather steep safekeeping fees.

Unfortunately, right as the warehouse was starting to turn a profit, tragedy struck the Yatela family, with the deaths of Don Arsenio and his brother Attilio, and the "temporary" takeover of the Syndicate by the late Don's consigliere, Ciro Veleno. Six months later, it looked as though Michael himself was dead as well, with reports of a hit against him having been attempted. An unspecified amount of time later, one of his brothers, Nicky, showed up in secret, asking to be housed and protected by his younger brother. Revealing to Lenny what happened to him in Lenox and suggesting that the attempted hit against Michael was almost certainly also Veleno's work, Lenny did not hesitate to offer his help, agreeing to let Nicky live with him in secret.

Three years later in 693, Lenny responded to the call of his oldest brother Michael to take down Ciro Veleno. Lenny's role was to provide a secret base of operations from which to plan the attack, using the warehouse as a temporary headquarters, as well as a storage facility to keep the armor, weapons, and other equipment purchased by Nicky, until it was time to assault Greening. After Veleno was publicly executed and Michael took the reins of power in the Syndicate, Lenny was directly promoted from the rank of enforcer to that of underboss, taking over the entirety of Viris Area. In thanks for the help and for believing in him, the first thing Lenny did as underboss was to let his ex-capo retire in peace.

Personality

Lenny describes himself as ambitious and always aiming to the top. Whether or not these ambitious desires are driven by insecurity or an innate desire to be better or more successful than his brothers has been debated many times. What is not in debate, however, is his ability to take initiative and think outside of the box. In Lenny's own words, what he doesn't have in charm, leadership, sheer aggression, or book smarts, he makes up with creative thinking.

Of the five siblings, he is the one constantly thinking about the future, always dreaming up schemes or plans on how to expand, no matter how outlandish. He sincerely believes that the Syndicate will control the entirety of the Mazes one day, and he is the one most vocal about taking the fight to the Maze Police and bring the law enforcers to their knees.

In his spare time, despite his position in the Syndicate, he enjoys scavenging in the UA and looking for interesting abandoned objects. One of the storage units at the Viris Area warehouse facility is said to contain his favorite treasures.
