Mamono (魔物) is a Youkai-go term which means "evil spirit". It is a category of creatures that have appeared in the Mazes alongside youkai, which possess a range of magical abilities and traits. Whereas youkai are sapient, civilized creatures that have integrated into society and communities, mamono are feral monsters residing in the Uncivilized Area, being one more category of dangerous creatures that can be found there.

Kamaitachi is a Youkai-go term which can be translated to "sickle weasel".

As the name suggests, the kamaitachi is essentially an enormous weasel, about the same size and weight as a wolf. The fur of these creatures ranges from light tans to dark browns, various shades of gray, or more rarely, completely black. All kamaitachi have slanted red eyes and a distinctive facial curvature, giving the impression that these creatures look angry and scowling. The first time these creatures were discovered, they were described as appearing to be "permanently pissed off at something", even when not actively defending itself.

The trademark foreclaws of the kamaitachi are enormous pairs of curved blades, which have been confirmed by the scientific community to be made out of stainless steel. Observation of these creatures has revealed that they are not actually born with these sickle-claws, and that until adulthood (at about 2 years of age), they are essentially completely normal creatures; or as normal as a highly territorial, giant weasel can be. Upon reaching adulthood, their foreclaws undergo dramatic, explosive (and presumably magical) growth, until reaching the shape, length, and consistency of sickle blades.

Although these claws frequently chip and even break during the course of a kamaitachi's life, as long as the creature is alive, they will actually regrow. This gives these peculiar creatures the extremely unlikely position of being a source of natural stainless steel. As a result, these creatures are often hunted. Intact blades are directly harvested to manufacture kama, while steel chips and pieces are typically harvested as scrap metal, to be melted down and recycled.

If there is one word to describe the kamaitachi, it's fearless. While they prefer to keep to themselves, forming nests in various nooks and crannies of the Uncivilized Area, they are also highly territorial; each nest designating a territory in which they will be found hunting and scavenging for food. The kamaitachi will attack any living creature it has the opportunity to lay its sickle-claws into, no matter how big or powerful. They will also not hesitate to band together and attack targets in unison (particularly if they are too big for one kamaitachi to handle), provoking fights that frequently end only when one side has been killed. The kamaitachi has the unique ability to spin very quickly in place with its sickle-claws deployed, essentially turning into a very sharp, very deadly spinning top capable of landing a potentially extremely high amount of hits (and therefore, wounds) on a target.

If you spot a kamaitachi, it means you've stepped into its territory; the best course of action depends on how many of these creatures there are, and how prepared you are to treat cuts and puncture wounds. If you see only one or two, it should be relatively easy to deal with, as they can be easily killed individually. If you are coming across a larger group, consider fleeing; or make sure you have plenty of bandages and blood transfusion kits to treat the wounds.
