The term halfling is the colloquial name of an offshoot species of humanity, with the scientific designation of Homo sapiens ex animalis. Halflings first appeared in the Mazes approximately 413 years ago, roughly at the same time as magicians did.
Halflings resemble humans at first glance, but possess several animalistic traits differentiating them from humans, appearing to be a cross between human and animal. They are completely sapient and civilized, and have integrated into settlements and society at large since their discovery. Eight different halfling sub-species exist, each one possessing traits and elements from a different animal. All halflings are biologically compatible with each other, humans, and by extension, with youkai, and all have retained the human's omnivore diet.
Avian halflings possess a range of bird-like features on an otherwise human-like body, and are most closely genetically related to the bearded vulture. They are most recognizable by the large pair of black or dark brown wings sprouting from their backs, in a manner reminiscent to a tengu. While they lack bird-like beaks, they possess a nictitating membrane (the "third eyelid") like that of a regular bird. Due to a genetic quirk, they are unable to produce true hair, instead growing tiny, hair-like feathers where head and body hair would be. What little of it does grow is primarily centered on the face, groin, and armpits. The top of an avian halfling's head is typically bald, or covered in a very light fuzz of very short feather-hair. By some cruel twist of fate, their genetic relation to bearded vultures is literal; both sexes produce "beards" made of these hair-like feathers.
Colloquially, an avian halfling may be referred to as a bird-person (the terms bird-boy and bird-girl are also frequently employed). On average, they are taller but leaner than humans, with an average height of 5 feet 9 inches and an average weight of 160 pounds for males and 140 pounds for females, wings included. Like humans, however, the actual height and weight may vary greatly between individuals.
Avian halflings are omnivorous, but have a notorious preference for meat and bones. The lack of a beak is made up for with a higher biting force than that of a human. This, alongside a highly acidic digestive and enzymes adapted to the digestion of bone, allows them to eat much like a vulture would. They also have a better tolerance for stale or expired food, though that does not preclude preferences of taste.
Avian halflings tend to prefer traveling solo or in small groups. Their ability to fly gives them unique abilities and perspectives. Many are UA dwellers or have temporary residences in the UA, and the most resourceful make creative use of their flight abilities, namely to reach ceiling crevices and passages. Avian halfling raiders are even known to create ceiling "nests" where they sleep or stash items in relative safety.
