The tengu (Youkai-go: 天狗, pronounced ten-goo, lit. "Heavenly dog", sometimes crow tengu) is a creature belonging to the Youkai category. Youkai are both sapient and sedentary, making them one of the civilized species of the Mazes.

Attacks and techniques
This creature has two attacks: Punch and Kick.

In addition, they have knowledge of all martial arts techniques.

Punch and kick
Identical to the basic unarmed combat punch and kick. Maximum attacks per turn is determined by the Martial arts combat skill level.

Equipment
A tengu's equipment is determined by their occupation.

Other information
Creature traits:
* Flight: This creature is capable of flying using its wings. As a free action, this creature may toggle Flight on or off once per turn. If Flight is on, this creature receives the following effects:
** Primed directional mines will not be set off by a flying creature on the same Side.
** Opponents attacking a flying creature suffer from a FT malus: FT+2 with melee attacks, FT+1 with ranged attacks.
** Flying creatures cannot take cover.
** Flying creatures suffer from certain maluses: Recoil +1 and FT+1.
** If at least half of their wings is disabled, this creature is forced off Flight and can no longer toggle it back on until healed.

Skills: All tengu have natural skills, however their occupation may also grant them additional skills. If natural and occupational skill levels were to conflict, the highest level prevails. The natural skills are as follows:
* Combat skills: Skilled (Martial arts), Unskilled (all other combat skills)
* Non-combat skills: Skilled (Evasion), Unskilled (all other non-combat skills)

Overview
Lore

Tengu are one of a number of youkai species. At first glance, they are humanoid creatures with avian traits, the most prominent of which is a pair of feathered wings on their back. Tengu also possess pointed, elf-like ears, and upon close examination, appear to grow both hair and feathers. The small amounts of regular hair are mostly concentrated on a tengu's head and face (hair, eyebrows, facial hair). Besides the wings, which have the largest and most obvious feathers, a tengu's body may have patches of extremely fine feathers where body hair is normally found on humanoids, which may feel like coarse hair to the touch.

Tengu skin tones range from tanned to dark, hair and feather color always match, and is usually typical of crows and other corvids; by far the most common is black (~66% of individuals), but other colors exist, namely brown, white, silver, various shades of blue (from silvery-blue to turquoise), or, extremely rarely, green.

Tengu are on the taller end of spectrum among youkai, averaging at 6 feet tall for both males and females. Although this varies greatly between individuals, tengu tend to have lean, toned bodies with well-defined muscles, very similarly to guhin. Their great agility, high resistance to pain, and natural affinity for martial arts makes them one of the "warrior" species of youkai.

Curiously, male tengu tend to have long and prominent noses, somewhat evocative of a bird's beak (which may be reminiscent of Cyrano de Bergerac in the real world). These noses are frequently caricatured in traditional masks and other traditional youkai imagery, usually depicting them as comically long (1 foot or longer) and bright red.

Guhin and tengu are often described as sister species, despite having very different physical appearances. Tengu are sometimes described as crow tengu (to differentiate them from the guhin, who are sometimes called "wolf tengu") because both have a natural affinity for martial arts and melee combat and have similar average heights, weights and constitutions. Guhin and tengu are natural partners said to complete each other (one fights on the ground, the other in the air), with a long history of guhin/tengu cooperation, as friends, couples, or simply battle partners.
