The Youkai-go word makaryuudo (魔狩人) literally translates to "evil hunter". One of the kanji, 魔 (ma, demon), is the same as in the word for mamono (魔物).

A makaryuudo is a member of a makari-dan (魔狩団), literally a "demon hunting group," but more commonly translated to mamono hunting group. These groups are comprised exclusively of civilian youkai, typically with a background in hunting, farming, courier work, or general adventuring. There exists at least 20 makari-dan across the Mazes; at least one can be found in every Youkai Nation town, plus a smattering in the rest of the world.

Makaryuudo are trained in the use of swords, bolt-action rifles, and select-fire combat rifles. New recruits receive almost militaristic training and discipline before they can be minted as full members. Although there are simple hierarchies, makari-dan leaders are no different from regular members in terms of equipment; they are simply in charge of recruitment and deciding what missions to undertake next. A makari-dan leader is officially known as the "boss of the hunt" (狩のボス, kari no bosu), but is more frequently referred to as simply "the boss" or "Boss-san" (ボスさん, bosu-san).

The self-proclaimed mission of all makaryuudo is to "advance the cause of youkai rights through the extermination of their feral cousins," the mamono. They believe that the existence of mamono is a liability for all youkai, not only because they are dangerous creatures in their own right, but also because they are often conflated with youkai. Makari-dan are not open to all and only accept youkai into their ranks.

Most people interpret the role of makaryuudo as that of a prototypal militia whose activities are similar to the original purpose of the Maze Military. While their stated missions are exclusively focused on mamono, makaryuudo are skilled hunters who often "supplement" their mamono-hunting missions with regular creature hunting and threat extermination. Their areas of operation are primarily centered in the Northeastern Zone and connecting roads and towns in the Northern, Central, and Eastern Zones.

Although many makaryuudo are fervently pro-Youkai Nation, all makari-dan make a point of differentiating themselves from activist fighters by wearing reinforced leather outfits, traditional leather equipment, and custom patches representing their town of origin. While the Maze Military does not officially recognize any specific makari-dan or makaryuudo in general as a threat, the rare interactions between soldiers and makaryuudo are typically tense and hostile, presumably due to the latter being an organized, armed group of youkai.
