Standard Law is the name of a standardized set of laws and rules created by the founders of the Maze Police. These rules are designed to standardize law enforcement across multiple towns and are meant to be enforced by local Town Security as well as the Maze Police itself.

A town following Standard Law is said to have Police protection, as they are allowed to call the Police for backup and processing of prisoners.

Qualifications and requirements

To be eligible for police protection, a town must meet the following requirements:

  • Not be affiliated with, or under the control of, a group or faction designated as a criminal organization.
  • Not be affiliated with, or under the control of, a group or faction which considers itself independent or part of a separate territory, even without known criminal activity.
  • Be willing to enforce all rules and laws outlined in Standard Law
  • Be willing to let the Maze Police handle the processing of arrested suspects
  • Be willing to enforce the laws on all sapient life; all sapients can be protected by the law, but all can be punished for breaking it as well.

If all conditions are met, a town's mayor may contact the Police to sign a Standard Law contract, which will grant that town the ability to call the Police for backup.

Law and regulations

All laws and rules covered by Standard Law are in one of four categories, ordered by importance. The higher the category, the harder the punishment for breaking a law in it.

From highest to lowest importance, the categories are as follows: Grand crimes, Major felonies, Minor felonies, and Misdemeanors.

As a general rule, a person may be charged and punished for an offense as though they were the successful, direct perpetrator, even if the act was only attempted or failed (attempted crime), or if they've helped another person commit the offenses (aiding and abetting).

Grand crimes

Recommended punishment: Arrest and long-time incarceration. Repeat offenses may result in life incarceration.

List of grand crimes:

  • Murder: The intentional or premeditated killing of sapient life.
  • Acts of torture: The deliberate inflicting of extreme physical or mental injury against another person.
  • Bribery: The act of paying a law enforcer (especially a member of the Maze Police), usually to turn a blind eye on another crime, or otherwise interfere with their work. Bribery is considered to be an extremely serious offense. Accepting bribes is considered to be one of the most dishonorable acts that can be done by a Police Officer, as it undermines the Police's Code of Conduct and the principle of No Masters, No Subjugation.
  • Crime against nature / Cannibalism: The act of eating or attempting to eat meat and/or other body parts from a sapient creature.
  • Grand robbery: Stealing objects with an estimated value equal or greater than Parallar symbol.png10 000, taken while using violence or threat of violence.
  • Sexual assault: Rape, sexual assault, and other forms of sexual abuse involving contact.
  • Slavery: The act of treating sapient life like property that can be owned, traded, used and abused at the owner's will, usually for the purpose of performing forced labor (work slavery) or sexual services (sex slavery).
  • Repeated major felonies

Major felonies

Recommended punishment: Arrest and short-time incarceration.

List of major felonies:

  • Grand criminal damage: Intentionally damaging or destroying a room, establishment, furniture, and/or objects with an estimated value equal or greater than Parallar symbol.png10 000.
  • Grand thievery: Stealing objects with an estimated value equal or greater than Parallar symbol.png10 000, taken without violence or threat of violence.
  • Possession of illegal meat: Carrying meat and/or body parts prepared from the remains of a sapient creature.
  • Robbery: Stealing objects with an estimated value of less than Parallar symbol.png10 000, taken while using violence or threat of violence.
  • Slaughter: The unintentional or emotionally-driven killing of sapient life.
  • Unlawful detainment: The act of restraining a person or locking them in a confined space, for the explicit purpose of reducing or eliminating their freedom of movement, without that person's explicit and informed consent.
  • Repeated minor felonies

Minor felonies

Recommended punishment: Fines, confiscation of equipment.

List of minor felonies:

  • Criminal damage: Intentionally damaging or destroying a room, establishment, furniture, and/or objects with an estimated value greater than Parallar symbol.png1 000 but less than Parallar symbol.png10 000.
  • Fencing / Black marketing: The act of acquiring stolen goods for the purpose of reselling them, therefore contributing to a black market
  • Gross public behavior: Usually defined as intentionally and publicly discharging bodily fluids (urine, fecal matter, blood, vomit, semen, etc.), usually for the purpose of shocking or embarrassing others. A person may also be charged with this offense for other acts if the arresting officers believe them to be of an exceptionally gross or disturbing nature (e.g. necrophilic behavior).
  • Harassment: Covers a wide range of acts, usually targeted towards one person, aiming at demeaning, insulting, threatening, upsetting, or otherwise embarrassing them.
  • Thievery: Stealing objects with an estimated value greater than Parallar symbol.png1 000 but less than Parallar symbol.png10 000, taken without violence or threat of violence.
  • Trespassing: Entering an area that is not meant to be accessed by the public, particularly if the perpetrator has made a forcible entrance.
  • Voyeurism: The act of observing another person's body without their consent, usually in a sexual context.
  • Repeated misdemeanors

Misdemeanors

Recommended punishment: Verbal warnings, fines, confiscation of equipment.

List of misdemeanors:

  • Exhibitionism / Streaking: The act of intentionally exposing one's genitals, usually for the purpose of shocking or embarrassing others. This generally does not apply to persons whose clothing has been stolen, destroyed, or otherwise forcibly removed from their possession.
  • Interference: The act of stopping, slowing down, misdirecting, or otherwise trying to negatively interfere into the work or operations of local Town Security or the Maze Police.
  • Lack of weapon discipline: Acts of dangerous negligence (intentional or not) with one's personal weapons, including but not limited to: Discharging firearms and/or detonating explosives without a good reason (immediate threat, training facility...), dangerously waving or swinging melee weapons, pointing weapons at sapients or property without a good reason, acts of "celebratory" gunfire, and other dangerous or undisciplined uses of one's weapons.
  • Petty criminal damage: Intentionally damaging or destroying a room, establishment, furniture, and/or objects with an estimated value equal or lesser than Parallar symbol.png1 000.
  • Petty thievery: Stealing objects with an estimated value equal or lesser than Parallar symbol.png1 000, taken without violence or threat of violence.
  • Vandalism: Defacing or damaging walls and furniture. Generally not enforced in the Uncivilized Area.
  • Verbal abuse: Occasional insults, verbal threats, and other such acts. This is, however, rarely strictly enforced.
