Overview

Splintercats are rare, but instantly recognizable feline creatures, resembling jaguars in general dimensions, but with several key differences. Their fur color is usually in the range of tan to light brown, and is striped rather than spotted, similarly to a tiger. All possess striking green eyes, which shine in the dark. But the most important and obvious difference is seen at the head. The entire forehead of a splintercat is armored with a thick, armored plate of keratin. These growths are called 'helms', named after the medieval helm.

The helm of a splintercat is an extension of the creature's skull, and is extremely resistant to impacts of all kinds. This is the most visible evidence of the splintercat's incredibly tough skeletal structure. The flesh and skin of the splintercat are also very resistant, with thinner, subdermal layers of keratin armor of various thicknesses protecting the nigh-entirety of the creature's body, giving the beast a sort of total body armor system.

Despite this armor, which gives the splintercat a bulky, beefy appearance, they are incredibly quick and agile creatures, which learn to run and sprint as soon as they are able to walk. The top speed of a splintercat is in the ballpark of 110 to 120 ft/s (75 to 81 mph), though they rarely have the opportunity to run this fast for extended periods of time, due to the nature of the Mazes.

Splintercats use a combination of their helm and their blistering land speed as a weapon, in the form of what became their signature attack, the Splinter-charge. Both the attack and the creature are named after the nasty tendency of breaking or destroying whatever it is that they charge into. Legend says that when these animals were first witnessed by sapients, they were said to resemble large cats with armor, but it is only after one was seen charging into a tree so hard that it was reduced into splinters, that the creature gained its name.

Splinter-charges are dangerous and lethal. Many people have been killed by splintercats charging into their ribs, often breaking most or all of them in the process. If you are facing these beasts, it is vital not to let these creatures charge you and to kill them as quickly as possible. Their bodies are rated as bullet-resistant, so bring the most powerful weapons you have against them, and if possible, use armor-piercing ammunition.
