Certain creatures in the Mazes are the result of past scientific experiments that have, for one reason or another, either gone wrong or been released into the Uncivilized Area, where they proceeded to "go native" and become one of the many species of creatures inhabiting the UA.

Slipworms are one of these creatures. They resemble enormous worms, with an average length of 5 feet, an average diameter of just under 1 foot, and an average weight ranging between 130 and 175 pounds. These creatures are fleshy, possess no eyes or limbs, and move in much the same way as an annelid: through repeated compression and extension of their body, a phenomenon known as peristalsis.

The slipworm's head is differentiated from the rest of the body by its rounded shape, capped by a cross-shaped section. This is the creature's mouth, which splits into four quarter-circular sections when fully opened. Each of these sections is armed with a large prominent fang called a worm tooth, and several rows of teeth which line up deeper into the mouth and throat. Remarkably, the slipworm possesses no tongue or equivalent appendage, and appears to simply grind food down to a shape that can be more manageably swallowed.

Slipworms are omnivorous and practice lithophagy - swallowing rocks to aid digestion, like certain species of snakes. They have also been observed gnawing on wood, leaving distinctive tracks of bite marks across the objects they chew. It has been suggested that slipworms chew on wood to keep their teeth sharp.

These creatures appear to reproduce asexually through parthenogenesis - a form of growth and development of embryos which does not require fertilization. Egg-laying occurs during a specific laying season (which appear to be between the months of Quartema and Nonama, thus lasting about six months). An individual can lay between two and sixteen eggs, which hatch in roughly five weeks. Juvenile slipworms then grow to full maturity in about a year, and have a life expectancy of six to seven years.

They are considered to be pests, and are frequently destroyed on sight by travelers and adventurers. On occasion, slipworm invasions are attempted by small groups (rarely exceeding 20 individuals), but they tend to be quickly repelled by Town Security or locals. If you find a slipworm, you should have no trouble killing it, as it is neither a particularly strong nor difficult to kill creature. Just watch out for its nasty bites, and always keep bandages at hand.
