Sheep are a peculiar type of creature known as an ovine. The word sheep is used in both singular and plural. Males are referred to as rams, and females as ewes (usually pronounced yous). They have an average height of 3 feet 8 inches. Rams weigh about 250 pounds on average, while ewes are much lighter, at 140 pounds.

These creatures are docile and afraid of conflict, tending to flee at the first sign of danger. Despite that, they are also remarkably affectionate, enjoying sapient contact (as long as it is non-hostile); pettings and grooming in particular. As such, they are a common sight in land farms, and although many are raised for their meat, a slim majority of sheep are raised exclusively for their wool. The activity of harvesting wool from a sheep is called shearing. Wool is an important resource, as it forms the basis of most textiles in the Mazes, supplemented by cotton, silk, and synthetic fibers.

Sheep meat is generally referred to as either lamb or mutton. It is not clear why two different terms have evolved to refer to sheep meat when they have been considered synonymous for thousands of years - the prominent theory among linguistic scholars is that there was once a distinction between the meat harvested from sheep used for wool and those used for meat, which has since dissolved into meaninglessness, resulting in two synonymous words. Regardless of how it's called, this type of meat is prized for its taste and its inclusion in many recipes; therefore it is considered more valuable.

Although it is rare nowadays, it is still possible to find sheep in the 'wild', in the Uncivilized Area. They are generally animals that have escaped a town's farm area, though some groups can still be found living in the wild, typically in outside areas where grass exists and therefore can be grazed on.
