Born on E7-414, Quartema 4 (414/4/4), Satoshi Sangi's birthdate was considered extremely unlucky, for it had four times the number 4 in it. Symbolically, he was given four days to live, but as Sangi was not born with defects or signs of poor health, he lived on.

Sangi was born and raised in the town of Yurai, growing up listening to stories of youkai settlers and adventurers, quickly becoming interested in politics and the condition of youkai across the world. Sangi long described himself as "a very un-satori-like satori"; he was not afraid of others, he is very tall (especially for a satori), he believed his natural powers were a blessing that could be used to do good, and above all else, he felt as though others were attracted to him rather than repulsed.
Mayor of Yurai, pre-Nation days
Sangi's was born and raised in the town of Yurai, growing up listening to stories of youkai settlers and adventurers, quickly becoming interested in politics and the condition of youkai across the world. His interest in politics coalesced in 450, when he presented his candidacy to the Yurai mayoral elections, running on a campaign promising the unification and strengthening of the youkai people and communities. Sangi won in a landslide, gaining 77% of the votes, as well as a new nickname: "Black-Eye", after the color of his third eye.
Three of his childhood friends, Daiki Haraguchi, Sayu Tawara, and Yuriko Hirota, all Yurai natives, became his closest staff mates. Together, alongside other unknown friends and acquaintances, they formed what is now known as Task Force "Mind's Eye" (作戦部隊 「心眼」, sakusen butai 「shingan」). The original purpose of this task force was to act as an information-gathering group, designed to centralize and address every problem that the citizens of Yurai were experiencing. However, Sangi had ulterior motives; he wished for the Task Force to be more than that, and he aspired to be far more than just Yurai's mayor.
A year later in 451, it is believed that Sangi met with the mayor of Mippei Yosai in order to discuss some sort of deal, for reasons yet unknown at the time. In Triema of the same year, Mippei Yosai established Task Force "Divine Edge" (作戦部隊 「神刃」, sakusen butai 「kamujin」 and opened a new facility, the Training Center (講習会場, koushuukaiba), intended to be a combat training and recruitment center for youkai fighters. Originally, this facility was believed to be a singular training center for town security and internal law enforcement, as Task Force "Divine Edge" was composed entirely of Mippei Yosai TownSec members.
The birth of the Youkai Nation
The Youkai Nation claimed that the settling party was not innocent and planned to settle a Military-aligned town within their territory. The Military disputed the claims, responding that the settlers were not at all affiliated with them and that this event proves the Youkai Nation are bloodthirsty terrorists with no legitimate claims.
It is believed that Sangi did not have the idea for Operation Blood Banner; instead being instead an initiative by one of his trusted lieutenants, Sayu Tawara. A female oni matching Tawara's description was said to have been in the area during the events, suggesting that she personally participated in the killings in some way.
Operation Red Temple
Despite the dire situation, his population continued to support him, and Sangi vowed that the Nation would remain strong and united. What ensued was fifty years of difficult decisions, which had profoundly changed Sangi's worldview and strategic approach. Returning to his mayoral duties in Yurai and assisted by his Task Force, Sangi witnessed the aftermath of the military harassment patrols firsthand; trade slowing down, any food and supplies not locally produced effectively stopped coming to the Nation (or were severely reduced). Caravans, adventurers, mercenaries, and all other traveling outfits began charging exorbitant prices to travel to and from the Youkai Nation, afraid of meeting a Military patrol. Life around the Nation's borders had become more dangerous.
Alongside these logistical problems were internal troubles. Increasingly, Sangi's population demanded that he put an end to these patrols and send the activist forces to fight back. However, Sangi refused every time; he knew that if activist forces were sent to protect civilian caravans, it would result in another war, and Sangi was worried that the weakened Nation wouldn't have the strength or the morale to defend itself. To alleviate these issues and attempt to restore trust and morale, the Task Force launched great campaigns of town facility expansions. Sangi wished for the Youkai Nation to be completely self-sufficient, capable of growing its own independently producing food, producing its own weapons and , ammunition, etc., and survive even if the rest of the world were to disappear tomorrow. Despite that, the Nation's populace endured rationing, increased prices, and famines, all with the knowledge that trying to leave for another town outside of the territory meant risking being shot by a military patrol.
With the death of Colonel Weil in 581, the Weil Era and its harassment campaign also ended. The new Military leader, Colonel Lembo, was the moderate and originalist that Sangi had hoped would come fifty years earlier; he quickly announced that the patrols would end and the Military would return to its original role of monster hunting and UA cleansing. This was a breath of fresh air for the Youkai Nation, and for Sangi, who had managed to weather one of the worst periods in youkai history.
With the rise of Colonel Wight, the Military returned to a hardline anti-youkai stance. The effects of the Great Military Reform and the formation of the new Phantom Forces were greeted with anxiety on the youkai side of the world, and these fears were confirmed when the Weil-era harassment campaigns were also reactivated. Sangi's fears had been proven true. Believing that the Military will be the one to strike first, the Nation has once again adopted a defensive protocol; however, unlike during the Weil era, he is no longer shy about sending activist forces to defend caravans and travelers, and it is now common to see activist fighters protect youkai civilians. So far, the decision has not yet led to a full-scale conflict, but in Sangi's mind, it is not a question of if, but when.

Personality
Although he may initially appear disinterested and emotionless, as most satori are stereotyped to be, Sangi is often described by his peers as exuding confidence and charisma, with a natural talent for leadership. Although his orator skills are also praised, Sangi himself often said he prefers Yuriko Hirota to speak for him. Sangi often self-described as "a very un-satori-like satori"; he was not afraid of others, he is very tall for his species, he believed his natural powers were a blessing that could be used to do good, and above all else, he felt as though others were attracted to him rather than repulsed. Many of the people that worked with him also described him as "naturally attractive", finding it easy to speak with him and easy to forget about his species and the stigmas associated with it. Sangi's entire worldview and demeanor are imprinted with his role as a leader and a visionary for the Youkai Nation; in an interview with Kitsune News Network, he described his life as being "focused on the cause," allowing himself few distractions or excesses. He frequently tours the Nation's towns and intersections, visiting locals, interviewing them about their day, offering to help personally with issues, and day-to-day problems. In Sangi's opinion, the only way to lead properly is to always have the people in mind, and the only way to have the people in mind is to live in their shoes and understand their problems. However, during another interview with KNN regarding the Youkai Nation and its status with the other factions in the world, when responding to a journalist's question (wipwhich reportedly was: "How far are you willing to go?"), Sangi famously responded; "to make this kind of omelette, more than a few eggs will need to be broken." He appeared to express no regret for his actions during Operation Red Temple, though he did view the Weil Era and its decades of isolation as his "greatest failure to the youkai people".  When asked about his vision for the future, Sangi simply replied: "Independence and unity, so that we may be free". The second half of the sentence, so that we may be free, became famous as a conversation ender between youkai activists (and later, sympathizers), similar to "Stay safe" or "Goodbye".
