Other information

Effects:

Skills: A satori's skills are determined by their occupation.

Creature traits:

  • Mind reader: This creature has low-level mind reading capabilities. They can detect the disposition and hostility of any creature they see, even if that creature is trying to disguise their true intentions. With enough concentration and exposure, they can also read the surface thoughts of a single creature (the exact effects and implications are left up to the GM's interpretation).

Overview

Satori are one of a number of youkai species, and are perhaps the most maligned and misunderstood, more so than even jorougumo. They resemble short humanoids, with regular humanoid skin tones, hair that can take on virtually any color of the visible spectrum, and most importantly, a protruding, prominent third eye, sticking out of a spherical growth on the satori's head. This third eye is larger than the "normal" pair of eyes, taking up to one third of the forehead's space. The third eye's iris can also take any color of the visible spectrum, but is always a different color from the satori's normal eyes.

The primary ability of a satori is psionics. They are capable of projecting psionic energy into various techniques; offensively (psi-blast), defensively (psi-confuse and psi-stun), or for healing themselves (psi-heal). They also possess the gift of psionic analysis - colloquially known as "mind reading". Through psionic analysis, a satori is always highly alert and reactive, and they can accurately read the true intentions of any creature on sight (even and especially if they are trying to conceal them). If given enough time to observe and concentrate on a single creature, a satori can eventually read that creature's surface thoughts, and further determine intentions or plans, as well as true emotions and feelings in greater detail.

Attempting to lie to, or manipulate a satori practically a lost cause; they can always see through you. For this reason, satori are naturally skilled interrogators, and some found successful careers as private eyes.

Unfortunately, satori cannot "turn off" their psionic analysis; even if they can try their best to consciously ignore the stream of information, they are always somewhat aware of the vague feelings and intentions of the creatures around them. This has the unfortunate effect of giving satori a very poor reputation; they are often distrusted and feared, if not outright hated, simply for the act of peeking into other people's minds. In turn, many satori become asocial and depressed, living as recluses, as far away from needless interaction as possible.

Contrary to popular belief, covering the satori's third eye does not do anything to stop their mind-reading capabilities, nor does damaging or destroying it. If a satori's third eye is destroyed, they become known as a tojime or closed-eye (閉じ目, pronounced tau-gee-meh). Tojime satori do not lose their mind-reading capabilities; however, the condition does appear to damage their mental stability, rendering them highly vulnerable to a number of psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia.

As of today, the links between the satori's third eye, their brain, their mind, and their psionic capabilities is not fully understood.

Despite these difficulties, satori are not devoid of the possibility to live normal, if not successful lives, they will simply choose whatever available jobs and occupations that will let them work solo, or with as few partners as possible. With that said, one should not be afraid to approach a satori; so long as your intentions are genuine and non-hostile, they will be very appreciative of the gesture.
