Procyons (Homo ferus ex procyonis) are one of the species of feral animal-people (scientific designation homo ferus), species that have evolved to grow humanoid traits and sufficient intelligence to use tools and weapons, but have remained largely 'feral'; they inhabit small, hidden communities in the UA, or are nomadic. They are not considered to be a sapient species, as none are most aren't able to speak a recognizable language, instead speaking in unrecognizable dialects, which seem to vary between species, sometimes between individual groups of tribes within the same species. Biologists believe that feral animal-people are "edge cases" of sapience; they may very well be self-aware, with the potential to one day develop the ability to speak a commonly-used language. Rare individuals are believed to have learned enough Common or Youkai-go to understand it and may even speak or write it.
At first glance, procyons may seem superficially similar to tanuki; they are humanoid creatures with raccoon ears and tails. They even have superficially similar dimensions; an average height of 5 feet 8 inches and an average weight of about 180 pounds. However, there are two major physical differences. Firstly, the procyon's genetic link is with the raccoon (procyon lotor), not the Japanese raccoon dog. Secondly, the body of a procyon has significantly more fur than that of a tanuki, comfortably covering every square inch of skin, making them even more animalistic than their youkai counterparts. Tanuki may take offense to being compared to a procyon for these reasons.
