Certain creatures in the Mazes are the result of past scientific experiments that have, for one reason or another, either gone wrong or been released into the Uncivilized Area, where they proceeded to "go native" and become one of the many species of creatures inhabiting the UA.

Hulkers (always capitalized) are heavily genetically altered humans, made to be taller, stronger, more muscular, and above all, near-impervious to pain. They are easily recognized by their albino complexion, grayish-silver hair, enormous muscles, and incredibly violent behavior. They are not believed to be fully feral, but none has been spotted uttering spoken words. They do, however, seem to understand spoken languages, suggesting that whatever mutations they have gone through have not completely eliminated their sapience. As of today, Hulkers are classified as non-sapient, but experts are currently divided on whether to consider them sapient (and therefore, potentially human).

They possess an average height of 6 feet and an average weight of 300 pounds. Although both males and females exist, field observations and analysis have revealed that they are completely sterile and therefore incapable of reproducing, which suggests that there is a fixed population of these creatures and that their numbers should, in theory, only go down.

Hulkers are believed to have been created as part of an ancient super-soldier project, and that whatever mishap caused the experiment to go wrong was also what caused these creatures to have been released into the UA. Their extreme violence is attributed to manipulations at the cognitive level, as the only thing they are not willing to attack is other Hulkers. This suggests that they are capable of recognizing their own species as "friendly". Unfortunately, they see all other species as "enemy".

Having retained their dexterity and humanoid shape, Hulkers can use weapons, wear load-bearing equipment and human clothing and armor. They are most frequently found wearing heavy body armor, but very rarely helmets. Their favorite weapons include shotguns, machine guns, big bore revolvers, and melee such as swords, sledgehammers, or morning stars. Curiously, it seems that their bulk has made them relatively slow, making them lack agility or striking power if forced to fight with their fists and feet. Field observations revealed that their punches and kicks hit no harder than a regular human's, despite the greatly increased muscle mass.

Pale Hulkers are the weaker of the two types of Hulkers, though they are by no means weak. These creatures are quite literally heavily armed and extremely dangerous, and facing even one may prove deadly if you are not very careful. If you are in a situation where you must fight one of these creatures, remember their extreme tolerance to pain means they can "tank" far more damage than a regular human should. The standard operating procedure is to destroy one of their limbs or cause so many wounds that they eventually bleed out and die. Alternatively, if you are a skilled fighter, you can try destroying the head, causing instant death. Decently powerful precision rifles are a must. Melee fighters are not at any particular disadvantage, but this may be a poor idea if the Hulker you are facing is also armed with a good melee weapon.
