Oni are one of a number of youkai species. They are large, muscle-bound humanoid creatures, resembling the largest and strongest of human bodybuilders, with two short yet large horns protruding from the head. They are the tallest and the largest youkai species, with an average height of 6 feet 3 inches and an average weight of 350 pounds. Their skin is very thick, and their flesh is known for being very stiff and resistant to blows, cuts, and punctures. It is so tough that it is considered bullet-resistant; many oni have personally described surviving gunfire and watching bullets flatten onto their bodies. Oni skin color varies greatly, from regular humanoid skin tones ranging between tanned and olive to brighter colors such as shades of red, blue, green, or more rarely, black.

Oni are famous for their size, strength, and resistance to pain; it is, therefore, no surprise that they are the primary "warrior" species among youkai, meant to draw fire, take a beating, and dish it back out. In a certain sense, they would be the "tanks" of the youkai world if such vehicles existed in the Mazes. Because of their great strength, many oni specialize as melee fighters and are frequently depicted carrying the traditional oni weapon, the kanabou.

When not in a combat role, oni are also skilled miners with intrinsic knowledge of minerals and ore veins and are often found assisting kappa engineers in youkai-owned mining facilities. They are also naturally suited for bodyguard and security roles, using their size and strength as naturally intimidating factors.

The most well-known stereotype about this species is their fondness for alcohol and natural resistance to inebriation, encouraging them to drink more. In a more general sense, oni are often stereotyped as drink-loving, hard-partying creatures that only care about having a good time. Many of them take the stereotype in stride and it is not uncommon to see them on the other side of the bar counter, as bartenders.

A side effect of this affinity for alcohol is that oni have a unique and pointed hatred for certain species of black mushrooms (specifically, the Oni's Bane and Oni Terror species), which induce a strange illness called the Anti-Oni syndrome. While under the effects of this illness, alcoholic drinks become highly toxic and eventually cause intense stomach pains, which can result in death if too much alcohol is consumed. For that reason, oni have vilified black mushrooms to the point of creating an idiom about them; to say that something or someone is a black mushroom is to call them extremely toxic or hazardous.
