Lynxes are the smallest of the feline species in the Mazes. Their scientific designation is simply lynx lynx, and they have no known subspecies. They are easily recognized with their tufted, pointy ears and the structure of their heads, giving the impression that they have fluffy beards. They are relatively small creatures, with an average height of about 2 feet, and an average weight of 50 pounds.

Lynxes in the Mazes have mostly grayish-silver fur dotted with dark spots or blotchy stripes, with white fur on their undersides from the belly to the neck. The patterns of dots and blotches on their fur are similar to that of a jaguar, but with far lower spot density.

These animals are not useful for any kind of work, yet they have been frequently captured, domesticated and kept as pets at least since the medieval eras. Most captured lynxes were caught as kittens then used to sapient contact for most of their lives - such lynxes are referred to as cats. As they cannot be trained to perform any useful work or functions like a dog can (such as herding or security), and are solely kept for pleasure and companionship, cats are considered to be luxury pets, kept only by the wealthy or the eccentric.

Lynxes are carnivorous creatures, preying on small animals such as chicken or turkey, only occasionally attacking creatures larger than itself. Though not a friendly creature by any means when found in the wild, they prefer to avoid unnecessary confrontations, and will not fight back if not provoked. They may even be pacified by throwing food at them; preferably meat, though they appreciate fish as well. A sufficiently tame lynx may feel comfortable enough to play with sapients or accept contact, such as pettings, though it is advised not to touch an animal that hasn't been domesticated, as there is an ever-present risk of clawing and biting.

Feline halflings and Kasha appear to be genetically closely related to lynxes, more than any other feline species in the Mazes.

As an amusing anecdote, the Old Tongue word for lynx is mia; presumably after the "meow" sound that lynxes make.
