/* Overview */
Kitsune are born with one tail, and famously grow a new one for every 100 years after birth, up to a maximum of nine tails (800 years of age). Although youkai already possess very long average lifespans, particularly compared to humans, none surpass the kitsune, who have never been observed dying of old age. They are the only youkai species that can reach ages greater than 400 years, and many individuals have lived for over a thousand years. There exist claims that certain individuals have lived since the very beginning of youkai history in the Mazes (~2300 years ago), however these are unverified claims; advanced age does not shield kitsune from the effects of forgetfulness or age-related dementia, and claims of individuals older than 1100 years are viewed with suspicion if not backed up by certified records.
Kitsune are also well-known for their wisdom, their sense of business, and their so-called "silver tongue", a term referring to their natural talents for speech and negotiation. These talents have made them successful in a great variety of domains, such as shopkeeping, psychology, library management, and record-keeping. Kitsune often reach positions of responsibility as they age, and many have become town mayors, running and managing their cities and communities for hundreds of years, often being known on a first-name basis by most of their inhabitants.
Although they possess unique magical abilities, with offensive, defensive and self-healing techniques, kitsune see themselves as better suited for scouting and hunting than frontline combat, especially if not supported by other, stronger youkai. They are generally risk-averse, and favor planning and strategy over thoughtless action, making them skilled squadleaders and commanders.
