Jaguars are large feline creatures, much larger and stronger than lynxes and as a result, more dangerous. Due to their scientific designation of panthera panthera, they are also sometimes called panthers.

Regular jaguars have an iconic, easily recognizable appearance. They possess golden to orange-ish fur with a dense pattern of black, blotchy spots across their entire bodies. They are relatively large, standing at 2 feet 2 inches on average, with an average body length of 5 to 6 feet and an average weight ranging between 150 and 200 pounds, with females tending to weigh less.

Jaguars have only one known subspecies, panthera nigris, also known as the black panther. They are no different from regular jaguars other than fur coloration, which is completely black. Roughly one in five jaguars are black panthers.

Pantherians are genetically related to jaguars, even sharing the 1 in 5 population of black-furred individuals.

These creatures have the particular ability to growl and roar. Roars are used for intimidation, expressing anger, or alerting other jaguars in the vicinity that their territory is being invaded by an unknown (and usually hostile) creature. Like all felines, they are carnivorous, and their large size and slender, agile bodies allow them to hunt far above their size class.

They are not afraid of sapients either, and jaguar attacks on sapients occur relatively frequently. Though not particularly difficult to kill, they can be dangerous in numbers, and will not hesitate to bite and claw opponents to shreds if they have the opportunity. If you are concerned about jaguars on your trip through the UA, the recommended load against jaguars is .30-30 Winchester with jacketed soft point projectiles, or something of equivalent power. Even if your weapon has the potential of dropping a jaguar with one hit to the body, it is recommended to confirm at least two or three hits for the sake of safety.
