Primates are a category of quadrupedal creatures capable of standing upright on their hind legs. They are considered to be the closest genetic ancestors of humans. All primates may be colloquially referred to as "monkeys", however this is a colloquial term and is not considered a correct term.
Gorillas are technically the second smallest of the primates in the Mazes, but they are by no means small. With an average height of 5 foot feet 3 inches (upright) and an average weight that ranges between 300-450 pounds for males and 200-250 pounds for females, gorillas are imposing creatures inspiring awe and fear. Most of their mass is concentrated in their massive, muscular torso and arms. In fact, they are so heavy that it is impractical for a gorilla to remain upright for more than a short period of time, preferring instead to walk on all fours. In much the same way older humans develop graying hair as they age, aging male gorillas (typically 10 years or older) develop patches of gray hair on their backs. Such individuals are called silverbacks.
Where chimpanzees are known for their mischievous nature, gorillas are instead known for their gentle nature, being shy, reserved, and family-oriented. Gorillas form family structures very similar to that of sapient species, living in groups of 30 to 40 individuals known as "tribes", subdivided into monogamic family groups and typically led by a dominant silverback.
