The gigantopithecus (full scientific designation: ''gorilla gigantopithecus''), or simply ''giganto'' as it is colloquially referred to, is the largest of the primates in the Mazes, and one of the tallest and biggest creatures in the world, averaging at 7 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 700 to 800 pounds.
Being even taller than the [[sasquatch]], the giganto therefore consequently has an even larger brain, which has translated into greater ability to understand complex concepts. While not sapient, biologists believe that gigantos may be at the edge of sapience, and may well be the link between non-sapient primates and [[human|humanity]] in general.
Gigantos are not just enormously tall and strong, they have enough intelligence and dexterity to understand the use and maintenance of weapons. Gigantos have been spotted carrying stolen [[load-bearing equipment]] and [[weapons|firearms]], and some have even been observed firing them and reloading them, suggesting that they could be a species of feral animal-people. However, biologists heavily disagree on whether to consider them as such, as they are so closely genetically related to humans that if they were capable of speaking languages, they would likely be considered an offshoot species of humanity outright.
The gigantopithecus is, whether by choice or by necessity, a solitary creature that has few opportunities to reproduce and fewer opportunities to find a peaceful existence. It is universally feared by all creatures smaller than itself, and demonized by sapients as a dangerous creature, despite there being no evidence of them having the outward violence of a [[bloodape]] and being merely territorial and concerned for self-preservation.
However, as intelligent and reserved as it may be, assuming that the gigantopithecus is a friendly creature and running up to them with friendly intentions is a very dangerous, near-suicidal prospect. If you have to face a giganto in a fight, make sure to check whether it is armed or not, as it will not hesitate to fight back using these weapons.
