The giant scorpion is one of several species of giant bugs native to the Mazes, and one of two that are arachnids rather than insects (the other being the giant scorpion). It appears to be an enormous version of the poecilotheria metallica, easily recognizable by the unique coloration of their bodies: a brilliant electric blue color, with yellow and black accents and sparse brown hair all over their legs, pedipalps, thorax and abdomen. They average at 4 feet 4 inches in height and 5 feet in length. These creatures are very light for their size, rarely weighing more than 30 pounds even when fully grown.

Unlike the other giant arachnid in the Mazes, the giant scorpion, giant tarantulas do not have natural layers of armor, instead being frighteningly quick and agile. This species possesses the fastest average land speed of all giant insects native to the Mazes, capable of crawling at up to 50 ft/s (about 34 mph), though they can occasionally perform short bursts of speed, up to 70 ft/s (~48 mph).

More frightening than their speed is their bite. Like with all tarantulae, their bites are venomous and their venom is quite potent. They are capable of biting targets and injecting potent venom up to four times in five seconds, or roughly 0.8 bite per second.

The only silver lining to encountering one of these creatures is that since they possess no chitinous armor, they can therefore be defeated using expanding bullets. However, one must take care not to use too weak a caliber (or melee weapon, if that's your specialty) when engaging them, as giant tarantulas are surprisingly resistant to pain and may continue fighting even if they have been hit multiple times. The only way to make sure these creatures are dead is when they curl up and shrivel, just like their smaller variants. A giant tarantula that is not moving but not shriveled may simply be knocked out and may recover at any moment.

Like all members of the Bugs category, the origin of these creatures is unknown. Because they lack any magical or supernatural elements, it has been theorized that these creatures are the result of some type of past scientific experiment gone wrong, and that they have since escaped and become a species native to the Uncivilized Area.
