The term halfling is the colloquial name of an offshoot species of humanity, with the scientific designation of Homo sapiens ex animalis. Halflings first appeared in the Mazes approximately 413 years ago, roughly at the same time as magicians did.

Halflings resemble humans at first glance, but possess several animalistic traits differentiating them from humans, appearing to be a cross between human and animal. Despite the use of the word "halfling", they are not exactly 50% human and 50% animal. They are completely sapient and civilized, and have integrated into settlements and society at large since their discovery. There exists 7 different halfling sub-species, each one possessing traits and elements from a different animal. All halflings are biologically compatible with each other, humans, and by extension, with youkai, and all have retained the human's omnivore diet.

Feline halflings possess, as the name suggests, feline features on an otherwise human-like body, and are genetically related to the lynx. Specifically, they possess feline ears and tail, slitted eyes, pointed fangs, and sharp, retractable claws instead of nails, on both hands and feet. They also possess a greater amount of body hair than a human, appearing as patches of fur, though none has ever been observed with a full coat covering the entire body.

Colloquially, a feline halfling may be referred to as a catperson (the terms catboy and catgirl are also frequently employed). On average, they are shorter and leaner than humans, with an average height of 5 feet 3 inches, and an average weight of 140 pounds for males, and 115 pounds for females. Like humans, however, the actual height and weight may vary greatly between individuals.

Although omnivorous, feline halflings tend to have a preference for meat, fish and seafood. Despite their slitted eyes, feline eyesight is no different from a human's, meaning they do not possess natural night vision. They do, however, possess greater natural agility, though it is not known whether it is due to some type of natural talent, or simply because cat-persons are leaner and thus better suited for feats of agility.
