Primates are a category of quadrupedal creatures capable of standing upright on their hind legs. They are considered to be the closest genetic ancestors of humans. All primates may be colloquially referred to as "monkeys", however this is a colloquial term and is not considered a correct term.
Chimpanzees are the smallest of the primates in the Mazes, and while . Though they are considered the least dangerous, they can still be a huge nuisance to adventurers, particularly when encountered in large groups.
On average, they reach a height of about 4 feet when standing upright, and weigh between 90 and 130 pounds. Their bodies are covered in brown or black hair, their feet resemble hands, and they do not possess tails. Chimpanzees are reputed for their agility and dexterity; their hand-shaped feet are just as dexterous as their "true" hands, with which they use for grabbing to grab and manipulating manipulate objects, or for climbing and hanging off of surfaces.
Although biological testing has revealed that all primates are true omnivores, chimpanzees, just like gorillas, have a heavy preference for fresh fruits supplemented with plants and herbs. This diet is where the stereotype of the banana-eating monkey comes from.
These creatures have a notorious reputation for being mischievous and prone to thievery. They are not afraid of sapients, and react to invasions of their personal space or territory by emitting loud screams and agitated gestures. If given the opportunity, a chimpanzee will not hesitate to grab onto an adventurer's gear, to try to take an object from them. Sometimes, it can be as innocuous as a hat or a pendant, but more aggressive chimpanzees have been known to try and steal tactical vests, utility belts, weapons right out of their from holsters, slings or scabbards, or even the very clothes that are on a person's back - with a surprising degree of success.
If you are not careful, a group of chimpanzees can quite literally strip you clean off. It is best to leave these creatures to their own device, devices or to try and throw decoy, useless objects to distract them, rather than try to fight them. If you must fight, prioritize stealth and ranged weapons, or be as scary and intimidating as possible; chimpanzees are not fighting creatures and will save themselves rather than expose themselves to known danger.
