A Regular Forces Captain is a senior member of the Maze Military As the name of the occupation indicates, they are part of the Regular Forces branch of the Military and hold the rank of Captain.

The rank of Captain is the third of the military officer ranks and the highest practical rank that can normally be reached by a typical soldier. This position is special; there is only one captain per company, thus there can only be six Regular Forces captains at any given moment.

Within the Military hierarchy, captains are above lieutenants. The only person that outranks a captain is the Colonel, the leader of the entire Military. A captain is in charge of a 225-man company, composed of themselves and four platoons (a total of 4 lieutenants, 20 sergeants, and 200 privates).

Captains are seldom seen on the field, usually processing paperwork, training new recruits, giving orders over the radio, or overseeing briefings and debriefings for various operations. However, as skilled leaders with a long military career behind them, Captains are more often than not extremely capable and very experienced and should not be underestimated.

To be promoted to Captain, a Lieutenant within the company must be designated by the current Captain to be their successor, typically within a month of retiring. Very rarely, there can be situations where the current Captain has died (either of old age or killed in action) without designating a successor. In such situations, an election is held, with the remaining Lieutenants as candidates. Privates and Sergeants must vote for the Lieutenant they wish to see promoted to Captain. Immediately after the election, the first traditional task of the newly-elected Captain is to fill the vacant Lieutenant position they left behind.

Commander

Bestowed only at the discretion of the Colonel, a Captain may receive an honorific promotion to the rank of Commander (abbreviated to Cmdr.), as a reward for exceptional acts of leadership, courage, bravery, or otherwise impressive performance. This honorific promotion is reserved for the oldest and best-performing captains, and is a mark of honor and proof of military excellence.
