The Uemag (pronounced oo-eh-mag or way-mag) is a creature belonging to the Science experiments category.

Attacks and techniques

This creature has four attacks: Bite, AP bite, Claws, and FP Tearing Claws.

Bite

Damage type Range MAPT IS LDV Pain (C1) Pain (C2) Pain (A1) Pain (A2) Pain (A3) Pain (A4) Pain (A5)
Piercing Melee 2 5 +3 50% 45% 35% 28% 20% 10% 2%

AP bite

Damage type Range MAPT IS LDV Pain (C1) Pain (C2) Pain (A1) Pain (A2) Pain (A3) Pain (A4) Pain (A5)
Piercing Melee 2 5 +4 50% 45% 68% 56% 42% 22% 5%
  • AP stands for armor-piercing. This attack is more efficient against armored ACs than against unarmored ACs to reflect an armor-piercing effect.

Claws

Damage type Range MAPT IS LDV Pain (C1) Pain (C2) Pain (A1) Pain (A2) Pain (A3) Pain (A4) Pain (A5)
Sharp Melee 4 3 +2 27% 24% 19% 15% 11% 5% 1%

FP Tearing Claws

Damage type Range MAPT IS LDV Pain (C1) Pain (C2) Pain (A1) Pain (A2) Pain (A3) Pain (A4) Pain (A5)
Sharp Melee 4 3 +3 62% 55% 19% 15% 11% 5% 1%
  • FP stands for flesh-piercing. This attack is more efficient against unarmored ACs than against armored ACs to reflect an effect similar to expanding ammunition.

Other information

Creature traits:

  • Drops items on death: Upon being defeated, this creature will drop the following items:
  • Shape-shifter (Friendly): This creature has the ability to disguise itself as another creature, taking on their appearance, clothing, armor, and LBE (but not weapons, items, or skills). Below is their standard strategy.
    • This creature typically does not appear in its natural form and will be encountered appearing as a random sapient species (&creature-civ + corresponding occupation)
    • This creature generally begins by appearing friendly or otherwise outgoing, and will try to get other people or adventurers to approach them for light conversation.
    • The GM may roll a Negotiation skill check on behalf of this creature to check if they convince their target.
      • If they are successful, this target can initiate combat immediately. If they do so, they have the first turn to themselves (no other creature can attack that turn).
      • This creature will prioritize using one of its most powerful techniques, depending on the target's armor. If it doesn't immediately kill the target, this creature will flee at the first opportunity.
      • If attacked before they de-transform, they will prioritize fleeing and may only fight if backed into a corner.

Skills:

  • Combat skills: Unskilled (all combat skills)
  • Non-combat skills: Skilled (Negotiating), Unskilled (all other non-combat skills)

Certain creatures in the Mazes are the result of past scientific experiments that have, for one reason or another, either gone wrong or been released into the Uncivilized Area, where they proceeded to "go native" and become one of the many species of creatures inhabiting the UA.

The name uemag comes from a Tal word, which means "monster." The uemag has also been variously referred to as "the thing," "the terror," or simply "the shape-shifter."

The uemag is perhaps one of the strangest and most unsettling of the creatures classified as scientific experiments. It is not known what they were before the events that turned them into the uemag. What is known is that these creatures have the ability to shapeshift, in a manner similar to the kuda-gitsune, allowing them to lure unsuspecting adventurers and passers-by and lull them into a false sense of security. Uemags can speak enough Common or Youkai-go to carry basic conversations, making them even more convincing and dangerous.

Their real appearance is that of a misshapen humanoid creature armed with long, sharp claws protruding from the back of its five-fingered hands, and a maw full of teeth as hard and sharp as steel. Once the uemag has lulled its prey into a conversation and ensured they have dropped their guard, it will de-transform and attack them as savagely and as suddenly as possible. Uemags appear to feed themselves exclusively by ambushing, killing, and eating the remains of their targets.

Although it will frequently imitate the appearance of regular people in its disguised form, including clothing and armor, it is only a ruse. The uemag is not capable of using weapons or wearing real armor, and attacking a disguised uemag will cause it the same damage as if it weren't disguised.

If you can manage to corner one into a fight or somehow meet a de-transformed uemag, they are no more resilient to damage than a regular human, and will go down in a few well-placed shots. The problem is getting there in the first place. Due to the deceptive nature of these creatures, it is very difficult to tell whether the random stranger you are speaking to is a uemag. A possible strategy is to ask it specific questions - its grasp of the language is usually too limited to offer accurate or natural responses. Unlike the kuda-gitsune, however, there is no way to immediately "defuse" a potential encounter. All they want is the flesh and blood of living adventurers. Especially yours.
