A baby dragon, which still has its gray scales. It has not yet developed any elemental powers.

The term "baby dragon", or less often "gray dragon", refers to any juvenile dragon with grayish scales and no elemental abilities. Although baby dragons, once hatched, do not gain their adult scales for up to 25 years, they are frequently booted from their mother's nest once they are 10, leaving them to fend for themselves in the Uncivilized Area. As such, most of the baby dragons encountered in the UA are between 10 and 20 years old. On average, baby dragons encountered in the UA are roughly 5 feet tall when standing on all four legs, about 6 foot 6 inches long from snout to tail, and weigh approximately 2000 pounds, or about 0.9 metric tons.

Dragons of all types are carnivorous, with jaws strong enough to rip the flesh and bones off of humans and other sapients, and have no trouble whatsoever digesting flesh, bone, fat and sinew alike. The digestive system of a dragon is advanced enough to extract and assimilate up to 95% of the proteins, fat, and other nutrients from any of the food they eat. Dragons prefer prey that are both meaty and fat so they are able to extract the most food energy out of them, requiring on average 20 000 kilocalories per day. On rare occasions, they will seek and eat food prepared by sapients, up to and including processed food items, though they often have problems properly digesting such items. Though it is most likely a measure of desperation driven by survival, some have suggested that certain dragons will pillage food reserves entirely out of spite and hatred.

All dragons, regardless of age and type, are notoriously violent and fearless, known for their refusal to back down from any type of danger. When threatened, dragons will attack the threat until it is destroyed or until they die, with no retreat or backing down, and with incredible ferocity, as though afflicted by unbridled rage and anger. When hurt or wounded, they are simply further enraged, and seem not to have any concept of "fight-or-flight" - these creatures are all fight, all the time.

This behavioral pattern extends to other dragons, making them fiercely competitive with one another, even right after hatching. It is not uncommon for siblings born from the same clutch of eggs to immediately attack one another, sometimes to the death. Dragons are therefore subsocial, considered by biologists to be the most solitary and hostile creature in the Mazes, only ever accepting the presence of another when seeking partners to mate with - and even that process can be violent. Dragons perform a sort of mating process that is best described as "fight until the other is dominated, fornicate, then leave". Should a male dragon end up being dominated, females are known for killing their partners after the deed is done, usually through lethal bites to the neck.

All attempts at taming dragons have failed, and many of these attempts resulted in injury or death. Biologists consider dragons to be the least friendly creature in the Mazes, as they seem to hate everyone and everything from birth to death.

Baby dragons may be young and lack an elemental breath ability, but they remain very dangerous creatures, their full body being protected by large, thick, bullet-resistant scales, as well as tough flesh and a marked resistance to pain. As a result, these are creatures practically born to take a beating and dish it back out. Without a breath ability, baby dragons rely on their other natural weapons; teeth, claws, and even their tail. It is recommended to bring powerful weapons and/or armor-piercing ammunition and to spare no effort or expenses when dealing with dragons of any kind, as even juveniles can be extremely dangerous.

As a baby dragon ages, their physical appearance also changes. Besides growing in size and mass, other elements of their bodies change, such as the shape of their heads, as well as the color and patterning of their body and scales. A baby dragon may grow up to become any one of the species of adult dragons, all of which are threat level 4. A dragon is considered to have reached adulthood when its scales have fully mutated to an adult coloration and when it has successfully performed its first elemental breath. The most common adult form is that of the red dragon, though some may become any one of the other six known species instead; the white Draconair, the blue Aquagon, the cyan Draken, the green Acidragon, the golden Electragon, and the violet Venedrake.
