Overview
Lore

The term halfling is the colloquial name of an offshoot species of humanity, with the scientific designation of Homo sapiens ex animalis. Halflings first appeared in the Mazes approximately 413 years ago, roughly at the same time as magicians did.

Halflings resemble humans at first glance, but possess several animalistic traits differentiating them from humans, appearing to be a cross between human and animal. They are completely sapient and civilized, and have integrated into settlements and society at large since their discovery. There exists 7 different halfling sub-species, each one possessing traits and elements from a different animal. All halflings are biologically compatible with each other, humans, and by extension, with youkai, and all have retained the human's omnivore diet.

Murid halflings possess murid (rodent-like) features on an otherwise human-like body, and are genetically related to mice and rats. Specifically, they possess mouse-like ears and tail (and lack human ears), long and frequently prominent upper incisive teeth, and generally thin, lean bodies with less average muscular mass than a human. They also possess a greater amount of body hair than a human, appearing as patches of fur, though none has ever been observed with a full coat covering the entire body.

Colloquially, a murid halfling may be referred to as a ratperson (ratboy and ratgirl are also commonly employed, sometimes substituted with mouse- as a prefix). On average, they are shorter and much leaner than humans, with an average height of 5 feet 4 inches, and an average weight of 110 pounds for males, and 90 pounds for females. Like humans, however, the actual height and weight may vary greatly between individuals.

Murid halflings are omnivorous, to the point of being stereotyped as being able to eat anything. They also possess the reputation being resistant to poisoning and toxins, which is partially rooted in truth (thanks to their slightly higher average blood quantity) but often exaggerated to the point of total immunity. Their lower average muscle mass translates, however, in less physical strength and resistance to physical damage. Ratpersons have worked and achieved success in nearly every domain imaginable in the Mazes, which led to more positive stereotypes of adaptability and versatility. They are sometimes described as the "most human-like of halflings," because they have been and continue to be successful in all sorts of domains.
